I lived; I laughed. I died; I cried.

The first time I found a door repair charge room, the string made me laugh; every other time, I felt PAIN.

'Twas good. The soundtrack is nice.

BUGGOS:

* The 'GAMBLE OR DON'T' string appears to have no SFX.
* Walking up while charging looks derpy because of the Z1 walking animation.
* You can keep one of the keys from L1--I think it was L1, anyways--if you bomb a wall, making the later dungeons a fair bit easier. I actually liked this, though, so please don't fix it.

Just the kind of quest I like, the layout of the overworld was thoughtful, so exploration was absorbing and fun. It was too easy though, and I'm certainly not the best Zelda player.
I hope you make another, Ben.

This was a pretty fun NES-style quest to play when you have nothing much to do. It's always nice to see old style quests like this show up once in a while. I actually liked the quest quite a lot, it was pretty simple and basic but that's fine since I guess that was the point lol. The overworld was really nicely done with a pretty diverse world with several different things all over the place. I liked how open the world was too, and you can basically go almost anywhere instantly, which is nice. The dungeons were pretty good too, though not as great as the overworld IMO. I noticed the later dungeons had a bit of filler design in some areas where you just have rooms with blocks scattered randomly with nothing much in them, but that's just nitpicking at this point lol. I do agree however, that Level 6 was a bit confusing at first and I had no idea what the "you must push on" hint was about until I accidentally tapped one of the statues. That threw me off for a little bit. The OST is superb though, I really loved listening to the enhanced soundtrack of some good tunes from the Zeldas. I do wish there were a greater diversity of song choices rather than repeating some in the dungeons, and I did hope Level 9 would have a bit more of an upbeat and more fitting song than the Final Hours, but that's just a personal preference thing I guess.

Overall this was a pretty solid Z1 style quest. It isn't anything too crazy or too special, but it definitely feels very Z1 like.

Now accept this 4/5 rating or don't.

This won't be a super long review, cause I don't have a ton of bad things to say, so we'll start with the good. This is a very solid, and consistent quest, from start the finish. The rules make sense, the design is consistent, the overall design, and feel of the quest is very professional. There aren't a ton of extra bells or whistles here, but this works well as an alternate version of Z1, that may have come out in an alternate timeline, or universe. The minor rules, and additions fit in very well, without hindering game play. If there was one problem I had with this quest, it was running out of bombs quite frequently. This is not really the game's fault, so much as it is the engine, and my own recklessness. Level 6 also has (but this has been modified, slightly, to my understanding) a gimmick that would be very hard to guess at if you're not familiar with how ZC, or the original Zelda works.

Overall though, I would highly recommend this quest to anyone who likes a good solid NES experience. If you're looking for a deep story, amazing graphics, and tons of scripts, this isn't the quest for you but what you do get is a charming throwback to the days of yore. Plus, the sound track is awesome!

The Good:
  • Consistent design.
  • Good level of challenge/ reward.
  • the OST is quite nice.
The Bad:
  • Bomb ammo :P
  • Level 6 was a bit confusing, unless you know about ZC meta

This gets a five from me, as I think it is indeed, "excellent"! :)
