Many legends speak of a hero who should arise from despair in the face of supreme evil, clad in green and wielding a sacred blade. Once the evil has been vanquished, the hero will always return the blade and vanish into the anonymity from whence he came. However, one such hero refused to return the blade to its proper rest. Misled by arrogance, he quickly turned against the people he had saved. This hero succumbed to the very evils he had so valiantly conquered, and waged war against the kingdom of Hyrule in a struggle for power. Hyrule's greatest champions were called to fight the rogue hero, and a terrible conflict smoldered for many years. The violence, bloodshed, and dark magic shattered the kingdom. Hyrule was brought to ruins, and its bountiful landscapes to dust and decay. Yet before the rest of the world could be destroyed, the sacred blade intervened. It annihilated the body of its master, and vanished without a trace. To this day, some say that the spirit of the lost hero still walks the world, planning its vengeance and craving the touch of the blade that proved its undoing...
One night, a mysterious voice contacts a young man living in Skyrol Vale. The voice informs him that a terrible evil is growing in a nearby land, and it is his destiny to rise up as the Hero of Time, collect the Triforce to empower himself, and stop the evil. The young man sets out eastward on the adventure of his lifetime...
A Hero's Legacy is the most ambitious Zelda Classic project I've worked on, and the first one I plan to complete. Currently, the quest is about a quarter complete: 3 main dungeons and 40% of the overworld (which will consist of two 8 x 16 maps) is finished; 2 of those dungeons are fully playable (the third needs to be retuned and connected with new areas of the overworld. Credit goes to Radien for creating the DoR tileset, nicklegends, JohnStacy, and Alestance for providing the database with their midis (additionally, some midis are created by yours truly specifically for this quest), and to several scripters on PureZC including Joe123 and ZoriaRPG.
Some of the many places our hero will visit:
Skyrol Vale: A lush grove of trees and grasses in a remote mountain valley, this is where our hero calls home. The only connection to the rest of the world lies in an disused underground passage, so the community is incredibly isolated.
Frozen Passage: Once an underground road between Skyrol Vale and the Westbrook Forest, the Frozen Passage has grown mysteriously cold in recent times. The presence of a powerful artifact inside has attracted many dangerous creatures that now call this their home. (Level 1)
Westbrook Forest: A lush, densely vegetated land to the west of Florana. Despite their picturesque beauty, these woods have been the demise of many a foolish traveler who'd gotten lost in their labyrinthine trails.
Westbrook Catacombs: A network of ancient tombs deep within the Westbrook Forest. These catacombs are a fickle beast, and to only the truly devoted will they give up their secrets. (Level 2)
Floran Fields: South of Hyrule, these few fields are the last vestiges of the formers' glory. Although relatively small, they are jam-packed with places to explore, home to the Sleeper's Beach, Florana Graveyards, Lake Maude, and of course Florana City herself, a small yet bustling town filled with refugees from the fallen kingdom. The city is ruled with an iron fist by its Duke, who is currently running a mass arrest and execution of suspected Hyrulean insurgents from his great castle.
Pan Mountain: The grand Pan Mountain chain towers above Westbrook and Florana, accessed just north of the Floran Fields. Explore alpine forests, cave systems, lakes, and rivers, and follow the trail to the volcanic crater known as Smoldering Crag, or the high tundra of Pan Mountain Summit
Burning Citadel: Once the headquarters of Ganon's evil scheming, the Burning Citadel is now slowly sinking into the lava pits of the Smoldering Crag. Only the uppermost floors are still exposed to the surface, where the loyal remnants of Ganon's army protect long-forgotten secrets
Towers of the Four Winds: Towering monuments to the West, North, East, and South Winds. In all four, our hero will face great trials in order to be rewarded with powerful treasure and the blessing of each wind
Hyrulean Wastes: Near the end of his adventure, our hero will return to the broken wastelands of Hyrule, its once-lush fields turned desolate. Once the crown jewel of the world, Hyrule is now inhabited only by ruthless bandits and terrible monsters. In these shattered lands our hero will see firsthand what is at stake should he fail in his quest.
