Amazing quest, the way every quest should be. Can't believe i didn't play this before.

It plays just like ALTTP but not annoying.

I honestly really enjoyed this quest. Nothing really frustrated me during my whole playthrough. The dungeons have a pretty solid design and have a nice difficulty, the overworld was pretty good, the custom bosses and regular enemies were pretty neat, the remixed soundtrack is pretty great and it's overall a pretty solid quest.

I give it a 4.5 rounded into a 5. I guess i could criticize it for being a little too standard, but since it's an homage to ALLTP, i'm not going to be hard on it for that. But i understand why someone would be bothered by that.

So this is a thing.

I decided to try this Quest out for my first actual playthrough of a Zelda Classic Quest because it was based off ALttP. I am mildly familiar with that game and figured if this were the same, I'd be pretty happy. I am glad to say this isn't the same, and is far superior. Now, I am not very familiar with ZC stuff, nor am I familiar with ZC stuff, so a lot of the things others here may catch will go over my head.

As for the quest itself, I would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially for someone just starting into ZC, as in it's current build it eases you into it pretty well. Gets you going with some very basic dungeons and doesn't do too much that leaves the player wondering what they're supposed to do. Overall a very straightforward adventure, and that's a good thing. The one downside to it was that it didn't feel like exploring got you too much. When I was able to go over the dark overworld more, I figured I would find Heart Pieces everywhere. But nope. Not even very many hidden little ruppee caves either. So that was the most disappointing aspect of the entire quest for me. I love me some Metroid, and one thing I always harp on in Metroid is secrets. Always secrets.

Again though, I still thoroughly enjoy it, and thanks to diving into a RAVE PARTY dungeon I got to experience some items that make one quite overpowered. And the overall straightforward approach to the quest made it easy for a scrub to get started. So I would definitely give my recommendation to it. Won't hurt your brain with block puzzles, has a rad rave party, and it isn't frustrating.

Edit: Staff contacted me an basically told me that I'd have to bump up my rating for all quests I have ever reviewed by one star. Note that this does not reflect my own opinion on the matter, or the quest, but just that it was something I was made required to do.

Quest 744. If I had were to describe it with only one word it would be: "generic". Luckily, this isn't Twitter, so I'll go into details.

If I were to rate this quest solely on gameplay, I'd give it a 4. For the most part it's solid, but there are some design issues here and there. The boss in the ice dungeon comes to mind, what with the floor being covered in traps, leaving the player with no spot to dodge should the boss stick around in the middle of the screen. Another example would be the dark room mechanic, which really didn't add anything to the experience if you ask me. But all in all, the quest was enjoyable to play from start to finish. Even though there were a few dips in quality here and there.

What takes down the rating, and my views of the quest, is how generic and safe the whole quest feel. There are very few new ideas here, and even concepts taken from other places, (dark world, etc.) have not been expanded upon in any noteworthy way. The world is not really interesting to explore either, as everything feels oddly familiar, and in many ways comes across as expected. And that's not to mention the narrative, which comes across as terribly forced. This isn't a narrative driven quest, far from it, but the dialogue and the overall plot feels entirely contrived, and hurts the experience. It seems to want to come across as quirky and funny, but somehow completely misses the point, and in many ways, fail to capitalise on obvious jokes.

Graphically it's not very inspiring either, sure it looks good, it looks like alttp ported to the ZC engine. I realise that was probably the point, but the quest kind of loses it's identity by not even attempting the "new coat of paint" approach. A lot of attention to detail in re-creating the alttp feel also feels entirely misguided. Such as when I had it explained to me that the ice floor in the ice palace is only animated in the large rooms because that's how it was in alttp. It's as if the author didn't question if this was even something worth doing. From my perspective, such a decision only hurts the consistency of the graphics, without actually providing any gain.

Would I recommend the quest? I mean, sure, it's probably going to be enjoyable. Just don't go in expecting it to be anything you haven't already seen before, because if you have played zelda games before, you have probably already seen everything this quest has to offer.

Just finished the quest with 24 deaths, clocking in at just over 17 hours. Was not disappointed! The AlttP nostalgia is strong with this one, from the tileset, enemies, level designs, bosses etc. The arranged soundtrack was a very nice touch (dark world level 4's was my favorite, never would have known it was a remix of Key Cavern from Link's Awakening!)...Eppy's Troll Dungeon (aka Secret Tunnel) was nice and challenging, and visually impressive too, and the techno music really got me going through it to beat it (that boss, though :P). Overall, stupendous job, Bagel, at recreating (for the most part) A Link to the Past, a classic if ever there was one, on Zelda Classic, a feat that I am sure was not easy in the least! The scripted bosses were excellently done (in particular Blind the Thief, Agahnim and Ganon, the others were great as well :-). The majority of the enemies were nice and unique (I liked the idea of giving Darknuts boomerangs...yes, even Death Knights *shudder*.
One thing I appreciated highly was the excess of healing rooms. I understand this quest has gone through many revisions, and the original apparently was heinously difficult, but even now, it's pretty challenging, so here's my pro tip: as is the case with most quests, whenever you find pots in a room, kill all the enemies in that room, if you can, and keep entering and exiting until your health is full, as the pots respawn. That gets you through the tough spots, usually in order to snag an elusive key you need.
The levels themselves were designed quite well, especially in the Dark World (levels 5, 6 and 8 come to mind for me). The Light World levels were pretty good, though they were more of "tutorial levels" really. But still nice! The Magic Mirror was used to perfection, and again mimics the original awesomely. My only wish is if it could warp you back to start like the original one could.
I was short 2 heart pieces...perhaps I'll look for them someday.
Congrats to everyone involved in this quest, all of your efforts show and I was very pleased with what I seen!
5 stars all the way! ---Soma

Loved it, for the most part. Turtle Rock was a bit too drawn out for my tastes, however. The custom bosses were nicely done and unique. Your music is pretty great too!

A rare Shoelace rating! I played this quest with Bagel watching me which I appreciate. My LP on Youtube has the full review. Here are some of the cliff notes.

Overworld: The overworld was a little bland. The Light/Dark throwback was awesome, but there were so many opportunities. It felt like the overworld was an afterthought to the good dungeons in the game. It was just weird to see very boxy/basic overworld screen design and then see good screen design in the dungeons. I think this was probably the biggest disappointment in the game. :(

Light world Level 1-3 were basic. Nothing jumped out and were memorible. The game really didn't start moving until you get to Agahim. Once you are here, the game got really good. It really felt like a blast from the past and felt like aLttP. Skull Woods, Caldera Shrine, Lakebed Temple were really good. Ice Palace really captured the aLttP feel. Great job. However, with all of the levels, it got really repetitive because it really seemed like copy-paste enemies in a lot of the rooms. Fast forward to the last dungeons of the game. Level 7 and 8 stick out on sucking all of my happiness out of me. I am bummed because I was really hyped up, and then I just got to the point of, well I came this far... Level 8 was a troll dungeon. Which is fine if done right, but the fighting of the same enemies over and over was just annoying. And that was the theme of the ending levels. It was, how annoying can we make these. Fight these enemies in this order, now this order, let's add ice, let's add conveyors, let's add dark room, let's add bumpers, etc.

I didn't get to complete the secret dungeon or get the last heart piece because when you beat the game, it doesn't let you restart to the overworld. :( So you have to start the game over if you want to get the goodies. However, after my LP I watched the secret dungeon. As I was afraid... it was the same pattern of the last levels. It just isn't fun. :(

I was set on giving this quest a 4.5 overall rating at Level 5, but the more I played and the more I saw in the later part of the game, it just became lazy design. So I give this a 3.4. Again, great feel to this game. Really feels like aLttP, this game is all about Dark World Level 1-6. And GREAT music. Wow. Again just the little details: repetitiveness, repetitiveness of darkroom script, same/lots of enemies in each screen, the troll levels...

That said, I can't wait to see what you can do for your next quest. If you iron and polish those things, you got the design part down with those levels. I think you can have the next 5 star quest.

Now this was a really fun quest to go through. Beaten in about 12 hours with 24 deaths, really nice challenge.

I really love the Z3 nostalgia feel to the quest and every dungeon was pretty unique and different. My favourite dungeon of the lot is definitely Level 744, with that soundtrack and the trippy colours, it was fucking amazing.

As far as difficulty goes, I'm very sure this used to be a LOT more harder and unfair. Thankfully, it seems much easier and more fair now, and that's a plus. The difficulty was just right and I didn't find myself getting too frustrated in places. The custom bosses were also superb and that final boss was intense.

The final thing I want to mention is the soundtrack. I really love the new music arrangements (especially Level 744), so really good job on that :D

Overall, this is a really fantastic quest, and I will definitely be making a Let's Play of this eventually. 5/5, amazing job man!

Amazing. You might want to tone down the difficulty in level 4 Dark World (Scaldera temple), as it took hours to beat the boss, let alone the temple. Now, the only way to make this more aLttP like would be to add Z3 scrolling if it comes out in a future update.

I beat this quest 2 days ago, and I gotta say, I really loved it. It's almost like A Link Between Worlds, in a way that it takes a lot of stuff from A Link to the Past and makes a new game out of it. I really liked seeing all these similarities to A Link to the Past, and yet it was a very new and different experience.

Since everything has been said already, I don't think I'll be bringing anything new to the table here. The overworld has secrets and stuff to find, the dungeons are fun to navigate through, the music is just great (although I'm not really a fan of enhanced music) and the enemies and bosses are always very fun to fight. I especially like the Gerudo Valley remix and the music used in Eppy's dungeon btw. This quest is very combat-focused. I can't remember any puzzles, actually. But that's fine. If it's meant to be a combat / exploration quest, than that's fine and it does it very well.

Sure, the quest also has it's shortcomings though. Which quest doesn't? There are alot of things I don't agree with. The overworld feels bland, the caves look wrong, there is incosistency going on (some items/keys are hold up while other items/keys aren't. It feels random throughout the quest), some battles feel repetitive because the same enemies are being used everywhere and the story is not well presented. I personally also have a problem with the fake bomb walls and the pointless rooms. I don't know why, but I think in Zelda games, every room needs to have a purpose.

In any case, these shortcomings don't really drag down the quest all that much. It's still a very fun experience and it's a quest I would recommend to try out! :)
