Deedee's Smol Quest (or, alternatively, "Deedee makes a fetish quest") is a short, 1 dungeon quest that has some stuff I'm into. It's not very big, and neither is Deedee. Deedee gets cursed and age regressed and needs to find a cure. Maybe gets babied along the way?
Playtime: 30-45 minutes? It's smol.
Dev Notes (Contains Spoilers!)
So I made this quest for a few reasons. First of all: a few of my friends convinced me to do it. I'd like to give a huge shout-out to Moosh for being super supportive, even going so far as to make the intro and ending cutscene and the costume system when things got down to the wire. The other reason I made this was to sort of put myself on the line, so to speak. I feel like a lot of people are ashamed of their interests, and ideally Pure should be an accepting place; so I'm putting this fetish I've had since I was 12 years old out there in the form of a quest so that people who feel ashamed of themselves.... don't feel ashamed. I was actually a bit stressed out while making this quest; diaper stuff and infantilism are some of those things where an intolerant person could squint at and label you as a certain word, in spite of it being an ultimately harmless fetish. I'm hoping that by putting this quest out there, it pushes the envelop a bit and encourages people to not be afraid of who they are, and encourages community acceptance of weird quirks. God, I sound corny.
Hey, speaking of the fetish quest: Making a fetish game is actually really hard! Appealing to fetishes means appealing to the right emotions and the right feelings with the right stimuli. With writing, it's (relatively) easier to trigger the right emotions; the imagination of the reader does a lot of heavy lifting. With artwork, you only see a still frame, maybe a comic showing a sequence of events; you can fill in the blanks of what happens before, after, or unseen in what you're shown with your imagination. Games? You're shown all the inbetween stuff, you see everything in the game. You can't rely on the power of imagination as easily (you still can, but it's harder). Not only that, but some fetishes (like bondage or transformation) often mean some form of depowerment; and depowerment is a hard sell in a game! It's tempting to make the depowerment a punishment, but by doing so you're tying the fetish (good feelings) with an ingame punishment (bad feelings, unless you're into that?).
So my gameplan was I'm gonna have a nursery that you can just chill out and relax in and be babied; you can stay as long as you want, you can interact with it as much as you want, but most of it is optional so that it doesn't turn into a long, dragged out section. I wanted to have a lot of toys, I was planning on having a cat laser pointer, I was planning on having a highchair section where you were fed food, and of course, I wanted to have the ability to use the diaper (but optionally, so that people who are squicked out by that don't have to engage). In practice; the nursery got shafted until the last hour and a half of development. I was unable to focus on it, knowing there was a boss to make, and intro/ending cutscenes to make. Some stuff made it cause they were made early (baby blocks, the banana laxatives, diaper changing), but I wanted to do more with it and hopefully I'll feel motivated to make it more complete in a full version of this quest. As it currently stands, in spite of setting out to make a fetish quest, the fetish content is unfortunately lacking and not all there (because I got sidetracked with essentially making a cool boss tech demo), and this is something I want to fix with a post-contest release.
Speaking of boss! This. This has been a thing I've longed to do since I joined ZC. One of my first requests on the forum was making "larger screens" to make four swords adventures styled bossed; and I've finally done it. You might look at it and think it's a bit lazy copying a boss from FSA (while others I think will be blown away), but there were so many creative challenges to make this work. ZC's resolution and palette-based transparency make doing a lot of the fancy stuff FSA did unfeasible. I made heavy use of bitmap dithering combined with ZC transparency to try and fake more advanced levels of transparency without bloating the palette. I made a whole camera system that could zoom in and out, which required redrawing everything to the screen on a higher layer. The GBA sections are actually part of the same region; the camera is just locked so you can't see them. This boss took a week; but I honestly don't feel like it needed to. So many times I'd just do one small thing and then I'd sleep the entire day away. ADHD brain is the worst....
Anyways, I hope you guys aren't too weirded out by this thing. I hope you found it cute, or maybe even fun.
