CANVAS 64

About the Game:

You find yourself in a world completely devoid of color.  The life and essence of everything stripped away, all emotion drained out of every living soul.  Your only hope in fixing it is to wield your paintbrush and color the canvases scattered around the world, thereby reshaping the environment around you.

Explore 4 8x8 world variants in search of a way to restore everything to its original beauty.

Wait a minute...wouldn't 4 8x8 overworlds mean that you're using more than 64 gameplay screens??

It may appear that way at first glance, but what you are witnessing in this quest is an advanced technique with the combo editor I've called Combo Shifting.  Every combo in this game will shift to different combos based on which DMap you're on in order to give off the illusion that you are on a different screen, when in reality, it's the same screen, just reskinned.  This allows for the 64 gameplay screens presented in the quest to be so much more.  In fact, those last four screenshots are all the same screen!

If you want a more info on this setup, this video goes into great detail about how it's made: https://youtu.be/AGQ5-3wBg9I

Bonus Objectives?

You will see the 2nd bonus objective of the contest utilized in many different places with the numbers 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64.  Can you notice them all?

I really enjoyed this quest Joaish!

First of all a very cool concept with changing the colours. Something different than seasons at least, and I like how each colour has it's own theme. I liked exploring the overworld in all the different colours a lot, and while at first I found it hard and confusing to navigate, by the end I knew it very well. Then the little puzzles were pretty good, especially those that required using the clearwater in a clever way.

The combat was enjoyable also, I like the custom enemies and the boss was pretty good. It was a bit too easy though with the health regen from those squid minions. The big wizzrobes had one annoying bug though, where the dashing SFX repeats super frequently until you leave the region. And I like that you put the effort of freezing enemies that would otherwise spawn on you.

Then the travel system was really clever. If possible, having the pictures in their respective colour would be really useful. Then about the colour switching I really liked this mechanism with the paintings also, just they are a little too sensitive and I found myself slashing it by accident too many times (while in combat f.e.). Activating them similarly to talking with an NPC would be more pleasant, I think. Lastly the clearwater... is just perfect. What a great addition and I loved this mechanic completely. Only minor feedback here is that the return portals are a bit too sensitive also.

And I found a couple of bugs, I don't know how you'd prefer to receive those, but I figure posting them here could prevent them from being reported twice:

Also some minor feedback: it would be good if the "quill requirement blocks" give a message explaining to come back later if you don't have enough quills; potion could also really use a warning/explanation, I directly wasted it after getting it; old man gives clearwater more than once (to little effect); and lastly it would be nice if the backs of houses were also layered and you can walk behind them a bit more, as you can also walk behind big trees.

All in all really enjoyed this quest, played for 3 hours I think and got 26 quills. Might try to 100% later, but I should try the other submissions too!

I'm a bit late on posting this, but I really enjoyed this quest! I didn't quite finish it because my computer restarted for no apparent reason near the end, unfortunately. But my favorite part was getting the eraser and seeing the images that showed the secrets. I never would have thought to do those things, but it's cool that I could have done them the whole time if only I'd known. Insane amount of work for the timeframe as well. Making a 256 "screen" quest and getting all the things to work (mostly) correctly is nuts to me.

I'm looking forward to trying it again and 100%-ing it once the database version is released!
