This tutorial explains how to set up special keys that can be used an unlimited number of times. This will work just like the Thief's, Magic, and Ultimate Keys used in several of the Dragon Quest games.
What you need:
1. A sprite for your key
2. A combo with the "Lock Block-Basic" combo type
CREATING THE KEY
Create the key using the Item Editor, making sure to use one of the 'Custom Item' listings.
In the item Editor, assign your key a name, a graphics sprite, a Display Name and for Type, select one of the zz0xx entries from the list. You can check the Equipment Item box if you want this to be owned by the player.
Go to Quests->ZInfo. There you can select 'zz0xx' in the Itemclass tab, uncheck the default box to give this key a separate and more meaningful Itemclass Name.
TO SET UP THE SUBSCREEN ITEM SLOT
Go to Quests->Misc Data->Subscreens. Then select a active subscreen that you are using. Go to Edit->New Ins->Item Slot. In the Basic Tab, Attributes section, you can select your key's item class. Then position it wherever you want in your subscreen inventory page. Repeat these steps if you are using other active subscreens for your quest.
SETTING UP THE LOCK BLOCK COMBO
With your Lock Block combo in your combo page, have the next combo on the list be the combo that comes after unlocking the block.
Open the Combo Editor for your Lock Block combo (right-click then Edit Combo).
You can include Label text to remind yourself of what key is needed to unlock the block.
Have the Solid box be all pink so there is no walkability.
Now go the Wizard.
In the Opening tab, you can pick what sound effect to play when the door is unlocked and click any of the button boxes. Doing so will allow the player to press the "A" button (or other buttons) to open the lock rather than walking up against the combo.
Go to the Locking tab. There you want to click the "Use Item" and "Require Item" boxes which will require this special key to unlock the block even if the player has a zillion regular keys or the game's Magic Key.
Select your key from that list. You can also assign a string that plays if the player lacks the key. If you have this set, you want to have the 'Messages Disappear' Quest Rule turned on. Otherwise this string will stay on screen until you leave
