Just an idea I had. Instead of a regular overworld, you get something like this to link the different areas.

Evan20000
Evan20000.png
A boss script: 400 lines of code. Time to write: 45 minutes. Boss' sword: 25 lines of code. Time to debug: 4 hours. Submitting a quest screenshot to SotW: Priceless.

Russ
Russ.png
Getting a cutscene framework done: 1 hour. Nesting a boss fight within that framework: 4 hours. Making sure it works in every possible boss screen under all circumstances: 1 hour. Getting the doors to close properly: TBD. Submitting a screenshot to SotW to get Evan to shut the Hell up about "SotW Raid!": Priceless.

Iss col out here for a link.

Lots o' shots, and lots o' good ones.

xanadude
A pleasant shot with a clear focal point. The cloud blocking the sun is a little confusing in contrast to the white clouds on the horizon.

Shoshon the Elegant
I don't think I've ever seen flowing wine as a "water" feature, so that's neat. The screen seems unnecessarily congested, though. Are you using the space on the northwestern border of the screen as well as you could be?

Shoelace
I think this screen would look better animated. I like how the clouds meet the cliffs on the bottom of the rock, but I find it difficult to understand the the top-right part. Is the waterfall in the foreground or the background?

Jamian
Intriguing! It's like a mix of SMB3 and Zelda II.

Evan20000
Nice. Very dark and atmospheric. I might prefer a little more contrast between foreground and background colors.

Russ
The backstory to this shot is more exciting than the shot itself... Though I do like the colorful and informative subscreen.

Anthus
Lots of contrast here, which works to make the screen feel sharp and icy, like biting cold. Voted here.

xanadude:
Pleasant and well constructed.

Shoshon:
Hello me.

Shoelace:
The shot gets me interested in playing the quest still. Looking good.

Jamian:
I've had this idea before, and wanted to do something with it. But never knew how to set it up.

Evan20000:
Looks like a really interesting boss fight.

Russ:
Looks like a kind of haunting image. I'm interested in seeing more.

Anthus:
Love the composition of the screen. And the background looks really nice. My vote.

You're mostly safe if you stand up on the platforms above him.

Spoiler

EDIT: Oh, right. I actually have to say something about these.

xanadude: There's a lot of gameboy shots that come through SotW and tbh I hate the art style of most of them for some reason or another, but yours is wonderful. Excellent application of the background tiles to give a feeling of majesty to what would otherwise be an ordinary (dungeon?) entrance.

Shoshon the Elegant: Looks cool. I don't really see the relation to a backstage theater, but the dungeon looks functional aside from that. Finish the quest so we can play it.

Shoelace: !!! Memes aside, it looks great. Sky shots are almost always scenery porn and this is no exception.

Jamian: Well on its own, it's nothing special; just World 1 of Mario 3. Buuuuuut, I can imagine you're going to do something neat with this in the future? I'm curious to see what you do.

Evan20000: delet this

Russ: tfw Moosh sleeps through the raid.

Anthus: The mountains make the screen. It's a pretty, yet otherwise functional screen without them, but the mountains push it into "Wow" territory.

I nulled my vote because I'm participating, but I'd probably have struggled to decide between Anthus, Xanadude or Shoelace. Luckily, I don't have to make such a decision! :P

Holy hot damn this was a bomb turnout.

xanadude: *vomits*

Shoshon the Elegant: Something about this screen is really pretty. It could be the NPCs or the palette, idk. But great shot!

Shoelace: Adding to the pile that is my hype for this quest. Loving it like mad.

Jamian: This is cool, I'm diggin the SMB3 vibes!

Evan20000: I love the clear inspiration from games like Castlevania. Very nice my guy.

Anthus: This is super... cool.  :P. I like the edits to the mountain tiles, but the mountain in the back feels like the tiles don't align. Idk, probably just me. But a nice classic shot indeed!

Null'd cause there's so many.

xanadude:
I really like the clouds in front of the sun. It makes me thing of Super Mario World for some reason :P. I like the high feel, and symmetry of this with a very nice backdrop. I'd recommend adding in few different cloud formations to break up the background symmetry a bit. It'll make the foreground pop out more.

Shoshon the Elegant:
I'm loving the direction of this project, as I've said. I'd go for some tree color variety, but what you have here is not bad. :)

Shoelace:
I'm not really a fan of the DK barrels, and this all looks kinda messy. Miss matching graphics works fine if it's low detail/ color, but this just doesn't work for me. There is no color balance and everything looks like the same level. The background needs to look farther away for this to work. The clouds also irk me, even giving them a softer (blue or pink ramp) border would make this look a lot better.

Jamian:
I'm very interested in seeing where this goes. At the very least I like the map idea for ZC.

Russ:
I dunno why, but I missed this one >.> Tbh, I don't have any witty comments or critique. It's a screenshot from a randomizer, and I'll play it when it's out :blah:

Evan20000:
I can appreciate the insane amount of effort that went into this. Knowing what you're capable of makes me wonder what is in store here. :P

Anthus:
Uhg, you're still here? I thought you got banned in like 2007.

Really nice turnout this week, lots of cool entries here.

xanadude - Pretty nice shot, I really like the background and that huge moon (I thought it was a sun at first honestly), which really sets the mood of the shot. I agree with nicklegends about the cloud issue, but still nice work anyway.

Shoshon the Elegant - Looks like I'm gonna get myself drunk with all that wine :P Pretty interesting concept for a dungeon though, it's pretty rare to see a shopping centre turned into a dungeon like this, so nice job so far.

Shoelace - Saying bye to the love of your life, and hello to that barrel on the top-left corner. I do kinda see what people mean when they say the shot is a bit hard to understand, especially the waterfall on the top-right corner which I don't really get, the size of the waterfall and stuff compared to the things in the distance is wildly different so that messes me up a bit with how that works. However, I assume it would look a lot better in game with animations and stuff. Still pretty nice anyway, and I can definitely see time and effort put into this.

Jamian - Very interesting idea you have here, never thought I would see SMB3 being recreated on ZC. I definitely like the idea of this.

Evan20000 - That is one massive sword, I seriously wonder how that can be carried with just one hand. The arena setting looks pretty good and quite dark, which I guess sets the mood nicely for this battle.

Russ - More Yuurei Randomiser huh? Looking pretty neat, I wonder how the boss fight will play out here.

Anthus - This is quite the shot. I really like the overall design for it and the custom tiles add quite a lot to the shot too. Though I will say the ice mountains (or whatever they are) in the background look a bit odd. Is it intentional for the tiles to look all misaligned like that?

Quite a tough one this week. Despite the one big issue I have with Shoelace's shot, I still do like it the most so I'll go ahead and vote for that one.

xanadude - lovely palette, i like the cloud in front of the sun moon.

shoshon - this dungeon looks promising, nice work. most users underdetail classic (an easy trap to fall into)

shoelace - love the use of visual height and clouds/water! i can just feel the water vapor and the misty spray.

jamian - very fun!

anthus - the mountains tiles look a little glitchy, but i don't care, i love the stylish NES style here and the icy cool atmosphere. i voted for this. now just to slightly edit the mountains to make them perfect

Those background mountains are from FF3. They are are a little odd but I wanted to use a different tile for the background. I edited them very slightly to make a one-tile "point" since I use them as background mountains. Use' em, or edit them if you want :)

Here's how they looked in game:

Just to clarify on my shot, the reason the clouds are red and not tan is because the sun in the shot (not a moon why did I write moon oh god it's a sun it's literally during SUN SET) is because in real life, clouds are darker when sun lies directly behind the clouds and shine through them.

Great turnout this week!

I choose this screen this time around because it is showing an important part of my game.  Link says good bye as he sets forth on his pending adventure.  The game is very storyline driven and this character plays a large role in the quest.

But I love the DK Barrels!  lol.  I worked too hard on making that by hand, I don't think I can get any better making barrels than that. >_<

The far background was lighten because of feedback, but because of the limits of color palette, that's the best it is going to get sadly.  What's good is the sky background does move so you can tell what is background and what is not.  There are actually 3 types of clouds with three different color depths.  This is by design, and again, limit of color palette.  :)

Yeah, that is going to happen with my screens.  I build for the map and the entire area rather than screens.  The Waterfall is part of the bigger island, but my island setup is going to be different from what people are used to seeing.  It makes more sense when playing the game.  But basically there are rivers in the sky with no Land holding them up.  It looks super crazy.  Maybe I will submit it to the Map of the Month one month to show that look out.  It's trippy. lol

I assumed you were using 8-bit color. But in that case, I can see why it would be harder to 'just change the background colors'. I am used to using lower color pallets, so I didn't really think about it tbh.

It's fine as long as those barrels aren't windrobe spawners. :P

Well I gotta disagree here. Actually quite a few screens here feel like they tried something new.

Nice week! I voted for Jamian, since I like the idea and would wanna see a quest like this.
