If you downloaded a remake of the first quest, and it included 2 versions; one being a faithful NES remake, and the other in a different set with improvements, would you expect the NES one to use the exact same rules as the first Zelda? This includes slow scrolling, non-skippable messages, three starting hearts, 255 max Rupee limit, and no palette, or sprite fixes.

These 'issues' were present in the original. The reason I'm asking is cause I'm torn here. I want it to be faithful, but the rules I specifically mentioned make the game soooo much smoother without really taking anything away, or changing anything fundamental. What do you think about changes? If you were going to download a NES Zelda remake, that is open, and free to look around, would you want it to be identical to Z1 for learning purposes? The second, Koten version, would have the aforementioned changes, among other things. I suppose any of this can be changed by the player as they see fit, but I want it to be good from the launch.

I could have posted this in the project feed, but I don't think you can make polls there under the updates. Thanks :).

Well, how, exactly, would the Classic version differ from the regular 1st.qst file? If it's meant to be an actual replacement, I'd say you should be as faithful as possible, including bugs and annoyances.

As it stands now, all the stuff I mentioned is currently changed from how it was the NES version. For play testing, I turned on some rules that fix NES issues, but I am leaning pretty hard toward keeping the Classic one completely the same, then use the Koten version to reflect things I think make it a little better. This would also further put the two examples further apart from each other, making them feel different, and more like an example of the things ZC can do for a basic quest. I think the rupee counter would be a fair change, since the 255 limit was a technical limit, and if you are expected to buy potions, or find fairy fountains if you restart with three hearts, you should be able to carry more than 5 potions worth of rupees with you lol. But, that'll be a change for the Koten version.

With ZC becoming open source, I am basically making this to upload to the database, and if anyone wants to package it with their forks, they can.

As long as you're going to have two versions, I see no reason to deviate from the original rules for the non-Koten version. I mean, if people will have access to both anyway, you may as well stay true to the original with the one that is... well, the original.

I agree with Golden Warrior. Having both an authentic version and a "fixed" version would be great. Honestly, with Z1, I don't mind the 3 heart rule since there is a fountain close to the start. That and after playing it enough times, it's easy.

I'd make it as faithful to the original as possible and save fixes for the new version. Especially when it comes to gameplay elements.

I could see maybe making fast scrolling or adding in a couple easter eggs or secrets. But as for changing the quest itself, I would say nah.

Given that you are making them fully-open, just allow the player to edit them, and change the rules to whatever they want. Leave them NES stock by default, so that the3y suffice as drop-in replacements for 1st.qst, in both Classic and Koten though, so that they are good files to redist with the opn0source ZC distros.

Aye, I used that word.

Yeah, I'm going to do two versions of each, so people have options. The default stock rules will apply to both Koten, and Classic, but since the qst files are so small, I'll include updates of both. But since it is open, anyone can change it. so maybe Instead of using 8 qst files, I'll just have a list of Rules I would recommend checking. Either way, I want the stock version to be faithful 100% cause it is intended to be packaged with spoons. I mean forks.

You could just package a note into the zip-file linking or copying the quest-rule-explanation from the ZC-wiki, since the way the quest-rules work is rather easy to understand.
