Those are raft paths. Yes of course. And you will drive them with an item called the Spinning Wheel (Drehgleiter in German). This has the same function as the raft so don't expect something special.

Here are gameplay screenshots inside the Quest related area Sonnenbrandung with the Spinning Wheel in action.

Looks nice! I prefer this over the standard raft a lot. I remember this same item has been done in Time After too, but it'll still make the quest feel fresher.

That reminds me of those lines that you have to use the Cane of Somaria to ride on in Turtle Rock of A Link to the Past. God that one dark room with the fire bars still annoys me to this day.

Actually following the raft path leads you to minor items. It's not quest progressing unless you're taking another stairs down.
