Hello everyone. Admittedly I don't feel like I have a whole lot to report, but that's not to say I haven't been busy. Progress has just been a little slow as I've been trying to work out some bugs, some more successfully then others.

I've gotten most of the scripts ready for the Bordale Wood now (I hope), and should be able to get into the actual design of the dungeon soon. The dungeon features a natural/magical theme and will have an outdoor floor along with an underground network that runs beneath it. Considering the magical theme of the dungeon, fairies will play an important role as you play through the dungeon. To the point that one fairy, whose name is Birger, will actually join you. Birger won't act like the fairy companions in OoT or MM, but will rather serve as a combat companion. Able to use his magic to attack foes or to defend you from enemy projectiles. Via the Ex buttons, Birger will obey various commands that the player gives him.
Ex1 will tell Birger to enter attack mode. When in attack mode, Birger will select the enemy closest to him, and then shoot little fairy pellets at it until it dies or Birger runs out of magic.
Ex2 will tell Birger to defend Link. While defending, Birger will circle Link and use his magic (or his own life if he runs out of magic) to block any enemy projectiles that come in contact with Birger.
Ex3 will tell Birger to stand still. While standing, Birger will regen HP and MP faster.
Since Birger flies, he only takes damage from enemy projectiles. However, since he only has 16 HP (which is equivilent to 4 hearts in this case), and isn't smart enough to even try to avoid enemy projectiles, there is definitely danger of Birger dying if the player is not careful. In the event that Birger dies, he will automatically revive with 1 HP and 1 MP when Link clears the screen of enemies or dies himself (and continues). I'm not sure if I'll keep this set up for the event of Birger dying or not. But I haven't thought of a better way to do it yet so this is how it is for now.

The above is a screenshot of Birger (the little red fairy) following Link through Bordale Wood. You can see Birger's vitals in the upper left hand corner of the screen. I plan on moving these vitals to the passive subscreen. But for now I just kinda jabbed 'em into the corner.

Other then the above I haven't got a whole lot done, I improved my slide script so that it no longer slides Link into solid combos, and I went back to level 1 and touched it up just a hair, making a few small changes and adding in pickup messages to the various items rewarded therein. I also finally had an idea for the level 1 dungeon that, once implemented, may turn the level 1 dungeon into something I'm actually happy with.

Concerning Beta testing, it's hard to say how far Zahalfor and I are from the first demo. The subscreen still needs to be made (of course, if nobody minds staring at ugliness every time they pull the subscreen up we could omit that part ;)), there are still a few things that could use touching up, and I haven't decided whether or not I want to try to implement my idea into level 1 before or after the first demo is released.

Hope everyone enjoyed this update. Next time it'll be Zahalfor's update, don't miss it!

Love the ideas so far! But I'm a bit confused about Birger. I like him and all, but what exactly happens when he dies? I didn't exactly understand what you were saying, but I would like to know how to bring him back to life! xD

Nothing much really happens when he dies. He basically just stops moving or attacking. To bring him back to life all you have to do is finish clearing the screen of any enemies that were on it when Birger died, and then Birger will automatically revive. I think it might work better if you actually had to go the location Birger died and then press a button or something. The only problem with that is that Birger's invisible when he's dead (though that could be remedied), plus, Birger can fly anywhere and as such he might die in a location Link couldn't reach him at.

I'll give you my thoughts as soon as an alpha/beta comes up, don't want to jump to conclusions

Totally understandable. And also the reason I look forward to getting a demo of some sort up in the near/soon/who knows when future. There is beginning to be a lot of little things like this that I am going to want feedback on, but currently just don't have them in good enough order to actually release a demo.

Nah, not quite. Though that does get me to thinking again. What if, when Birger died, his essence automatically lands in your inventory and then all you have to do is take his essence to say, a fairy fountain, to revive him? I think that might work rather well. Or maybe you can buy something in shops to revive him. Due to context, having to use an item from a shop might not work out to well though. Have to think about it some.

Interesting thought. Basically just have an item that revives Birger instead of healing Link right?

Edit: Is this the script you were talking about? Or did I miss it? http://www.purezc.ne...=scripts&id=147

This is a really cool idea. Is there any possibility of the player upgrading Birger's abilities throughout the quest?

It's a definite possibility. Mostly depends on rather or not Birger follows you outside of Bordale Wood. I'm leaning towards him following you for the remainder of the quest, but I'll have to discuss it with Zahalfor before anything definite is decided. If he is good outside of the Bordale Wood, it will be necessary for him to be upgradeable. As otherwise, by the last level, Birger will be almost useless. At least, his attacks will be, his defensive ability's will still be useful. Currently, I hadn't thought much about how the player would be able to improve Birger, but I do have a few ideas. But as stated before, I kinda need to discuss this with Zahalfor before deciding what or how anything happens to Birger after the Bordale Wood.

Speaking of whom, here I am :D.

Great update, Dwarlen, and thanks for all the interest and feedback, everyone! :) We will have to discus Birger's impact on the story/quest if he continues to accompany Link after the Bordale Wood. I kind of like the idea, but I know it will change some things. So we will have to decide what best suits the story :).

You can release an alpha or beta as private if you don't want people too see it

True, and I certainly plan on doing so. However, I'm just not ready to release a demo even to you beta testers. I believe a alpha/beta is close, but not quite there yet. Basically, I want to take care of most of the glaring stuff so that we don't have to worry to much about it while beta testing ;). I think to sum it up, I can type this sentence: I want to have the foundations built before you guys shake the house down :D.
