Something about it feels just totally wrong. Levels 5, 6, and 7 kick your ass, and Level 8 is a total letdown. It felt wrong to me as a kid, and it feels even more wrong now, even with the Gohma 3 as a boss. So here's my proposition to fix it, without totally overhauling the enemy cast:

1. Bosses, Keese, and Flashing Ropes stay the same.
2. Wall Masters, Red Goriyas and Blue Goriyas get scaled to Magic Sword/Blue Ring level.
3. Stalfos now take 2 Hearts (8 HP) Of Damage with their swords and their direct contact.

What do you think?

I can give you an alternate perspective on it, but that's all. I would say potential for speed running is important too. If you can get through LV 8 with no potion use, great. Also out-of-order dungeons is important for speed runs. I believe the world-record run goes through LV8 as the second dungeon or something like that.

Of course by changing the bosses the speed-run routes are already broken so it's your call. :P

You're right, the Gohma 3 will stop speed runners right in their tracks.

Level is still shit-easy though, and nothing stops the speed runners from breaking in and stealing the Magic Key yet (which is a huge time-breaker)

My experience running the 2nd Quest is still limited (I mostly run 1st and New).

It's just that if I start at full life I always get to the end with full life or only 1 Heart gone, it's kinda sad, where like Level 5 burns me for a Potion every time I play it.

Edit 2: 15 edits, I know, but I asked PM on the topic. He has a good feel for Zelda 1 like me, maybe he can share some insight.

TBH I had forgotten about speed running when you asked me about the bosses.

Here is the current world record 2cd quest run: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=oO5fuzPgzfY (Pretty fast!) I am only 6+ minutes away from his 1st quest record... oh well. :P

That screen scroll glitch is really on the borderline of being fair, but it looks like it was done on a regular NES, I'd like to see him do it from bootup like TG though.....

Nowhere near close to that, and the glitch doesn't work on ZC.
