So, I'm certain nearly everybody here has played "The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening". Well, here's something neat that I found. It's a "Master Quest" styled hack of the game that is fairly difficult, yet from what I've played so far, pretty fair. How difficult is it? Well, the owl flies off with the sword from the beach, and drops it down the well by accident. When you go to the well, the path to jump in is blocked by a Power Bracelet boulder. However, with a bit of pit-physics manipulating (diagonal walking past the corners), you can sneak into the forest anyways. You grab the Mushroom and get it to the witch for Magic Powder, and can eventually get the key to the Tail Cave. The Magic Powder can remove bushes, so you can get back to town. You seem to have to navigate at least half of the first dungeon without the sword, relying on the limited-use powder and shield/pit combos to kill enemies.

I haven't been able to find a walkthrough anywhere, so I figured I'd post about the hack and put up a link to the patch. That way, somebody here would be bound to be interested enough to try it, and I'd have a way to ask questions when I get stuck. (To be fair, though, it's pretty good, so we'd both win.)

Anyways, here's a link to the patch: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1188/

EDIT: I got stuck and spent some more time looking for a guide. I found a video showing how to get up to and past the Tail Cave. It turns out you have to play without a sword up until the point where all that's left are the two bosses, and even then, you have to go exploring to find the other stuff needed to actually get the sword. Anyways, here's the video to show how the game goes now.

I've made it to Level 2 and am wandering around confused on what to do. Maybe I need the boots...

Oh, you mean the pre-sword music? Funny enough, that's one of my favorite pieces in the game. I absolutely hated how you only got to hear it once, and only for a couple minutes in the original. Of course, even for me, by the time I got the sword in this one, I was starting to get a bit tired of it. Kind of odd hearing it in the Tail Cave.

I never knew that the song in particular was set to play until the sword was in your inventory. I thought that since the only overworld music that it overrode was the outdoors overworld tune, that it was set to only play over that one. I didn't know that if you somehow got into areas like the forest or inside a dungeon that it would keep on going.

If it's possible, a good compromise would probably be to make this tune play in one of the two villages. Probably have it play as the Mabe Village music, and give Animal Village the normal town music. Unless Animal Village has its own melody, I haven't played the original game in a while, and I'm on the second dungeon as well. I can't tell if you're supposed to get the Pegasus Boots or the Hookshot here.

Also, having a GBC emulator on my DS is making this much more fun. The one I'm using, called GameYob, even has the Super Game Boy borders so it fills the rest of the empty space on the screen. (I miss my old Super Game Boy, that thing was awesome!)

EDIT: Eppy, you're not going to believe this, but you know that screen with the push-away enemy past the staircase in the room immediately after the miniboss? If you go in there with a Piece of Power and charge your sword, you can push against and resist the push-away effect. You have to get the timing perfect so you don't throw yourself into the holes, but if you keep pushing forward with a charged sword and Piece of Power, you'll get right through. The chest it's guarding contains the Pegasus Boots. Save states help a LOT for this particular part.

Wait, so...what?  The game forces you to glitch your way through?  I'm sorry, but I hate hacks that do that, especially the Super Mario World hacks.  In what game, EVER, would you be FORCED to glitch your way through?

The name of the hack was chosen kind of badly. :l

LA Master Quest would have done way better.

What part of it is a glitch? The Owl Statue near the staircase leading to the room specifically states "Use the temporary power to get through", and if you think about it, it is called a "Piece of Power", so you could assume that it grants additional strength to more than Link's sword arm.

The description for the hack did say that it would use items in ways that weren't explored fully in the original game. In hindsight, it seems rather clever, although it would have been better if it was hinted at a bit more. For instance, if the books in the Library were changed to reflect different things like this for a bit more of a hint.

The bit that caught me off guard is that all of the doors are in the exact same locations as the original game, but they won't always be the same type of door. It took me forever to realize that the northern wall in the room with the Pegasus Boots had an unmarked bombable spot there, because the original dungeon had a doorway there. (the original room is the Pols Voice-Keese-Stalfos room).

I've already made it to level 4 in this hack, and now I am really stuck. I already used up two of the keys in that dungeon, and I can't get to the last one, because I need the flippers to get over there. But the problem is, the path that would take me to where the flippers have been moved to is blocked off by a lock block. Also, the owl statue says 'The Ocarina is the last key.' And that doesn't seem to make much sense. I've tried playing the stupid Ocarina everywhere I can think of in that dungeon, and nothing happens. So what on earth is that clue supposed to mean anyway?

I got to the boots last night and then went to sleep. More exploring tonight when I get home, I guess.

Hard Awakening sounds kinky.

I'm not touching this hack(I'm still doing a Stream LP is the Original Blind.), I've already died so many times on LADX.

It's not that bad, really. Try playing it after finishing the original game.

What emulators are you all using, I tried VBA-M v1097 and that freezes on game over screen >.>

Alternatively, what ROM version did you apply the patch to?

So I contacted the author about my issue and he mentioned that Romhacking.net actually hasn't got v1.1 of his hack yet (He wasn't aware of this issue until I mentioned it). The download gives you v1.0 of his hack and he intends to resolve this "Soon" (V1.1 will have an updated title screen). Also v1.0 of the original Link's Awakening DX ROM is recommended.

Romhacks.net or Romhacking.net? Do you know if 1.1 makes any major changes or if it's just the title screen and hopefully cutting down the non-sword music? I'm on Bottle Grotto (haven't played for a bit, been playing Final Fantasy Adventure), so if it's just those two, I don't think I'll bother updating.
