Voidrunner

A 2 week quest by Purplemandown

The Void. The space between spaces, time between times. It holds all existence within it, and it is once again under threat of destruction. Take control of Link, a young man from Hyrule, and take the fight to Alexander DeVaughn, the man who seeks to destroy your home and everything you have ever known.

Hints and Tips:

Explore!

Seriously, this can't be stated enough. There's only 4 (or 5, depending on the ending you get) levels. With that in mind, the difficulty ramps up pretty fast. You're going to have to have everything you can get to beat some of this quest. There is 10 hearts, the blue and red ring, and the white sword which are all optional. But, because you're going to be fighting many dangerous foes, you're going to want every power-up you can get. Furthermore, this quest has multiple endings, and your ending is determined by how many of the 8 achievement medals you have before you fight the level 4 boss. Look all over, as a few of them can be missed (don't worry too much, though. See below for more details on what to do if you miss them). And, finally, exploring can lead you to portals to the void, which can be used for fast travel once opened by stepping on their corresponding switches in the overworld.

Use your expendables!

Potions, arrows, and bombs are all really cheap. Furthermore, you can hold 60 arrows and 3 potions right from the start, and WILL get 25 bombs before level 1. Why do you get so many? Because you'll need them. There aren't many heart containers, and the Magic Sword doesn't come into play until late. You'll need to burn through them if you want to survive. Let me put it into perspective. You'll be fighting Blue Darknuts and Wizzrobes with the White sword and 8 hearts. You're going to need the extra firepower that all these bombs and potions provide. And trust me, I speak from experience when I say that you'll need to bring 25 bombs to kill the 4 Splitting Darknuts that are part of the level 3 boss...

If you're still stuck, check out the Upgrade Shop!

This part is completely optional. But if you really get stuck and can't get past a particularly difficult part, you've explored, and you used your expendables, then this might just be up your alley. There is a shop that sells upgraded weapons and ammo containers somewhere in the Forneus Frostland. Also, for those of you too lazy to explore earlier who missed it, the shop sells the 3 achievement medals that it is possible to miss, as well as the one that is really hard to find. I wouldn't recommend buying this last one, though, because it is located right next to the Red Ring, which would be a major help in Level 5 (If you're going for the best ending). HOWEVER, I will say that I beat all three endings without buying anything from this shop. So everything in there is strictly optional, but it is there for you if you get stuck.

So, there it is! Good luck, young warrior, as you hunt down the one that is destroying your universe! In all seriousness, though, I had a blast making this. Though, I can say I likely won't do any more two week quests, it was a fun experience.

And, just for the record, I got the best ending, 100%, in a little under 3 hours, knowing exactly where everything was. Let's see if anyone can top that!

DO NOT USE THE FILE IN THE OP!!!!

That is an old, outdated version. Use the one here, I think. Or, you could wait for the DX, which will be released with the release of 2.5, if I have it done in time.

I'm in level 1 right now, but let me share my thoughts on this so far.

First off, it's incredible. One of the better quests I've ever seen so far, and the fact that you made it in two weeks is outstanding. I do have a few minor complaints I want to talk about. First, the X/Y button uses. Strafing is pretty much useless, and the talk button could easily be reassigned to A. This would free up the X/Y buttons to be used for scrolling between items, an option I would Much, MUCH rather see. I die a little on the inside every time I have to open the subscreen to switch items. Second, could we start out with the sword? I explored most of the overworld before finding it on the first dang screen of the game. And lastly, the achievement medals. I only found one so far, but...
Spoiler

Other than that though, I'm really liking this so far.

I'm stuck on the hamiltonian path puzzle in the tree dungeon. Any hints?

I guess that there is a bug that allows you to skip the 4th level boss to the (worst, if I'm not mistaken) ending...

I'm not going to change it now, seeing as that takes a whole lot of digging in my scripts, but I'll certainly do that when I throw the DX together. To be honest, the R button talk thing was a remnant of an old glitch where pressing A to end a message string would instantly start it again...

I didn't think it was really all that hard to find. I'll figure something out for this one (Which will probably end up being the sword being given, but I might just make the chest much more noticeable, or something. We'll see.)

QUOTE
And lastly, the achievement medals. I only found one so far, but...

That was really just the result of me not having enough time. in the DX, I'll be sure to add an info guy or something.

But for now, I'll just tell you all the three miss-able ones now:

Spoiler

The other five can be done at any time. But remember, achievements are counted before the level 4 boss.

You should end in the bottom-right corner (The higher of the two in that corner). Your first move upon entering the puzzle should be down. If that doesn't do it for you, let me know.

Whoops! I had the side warp all set up and everything, just forgot to set it.

Bug Fix

Changes: -Level 4 boss bug fixed.

If anyone's got anything else (bugs, suggestions, tips, ect.), lemme know!

Wow... somehow the only three medals I've found so far are the only three missable ones. Yay, I guess. Didn't really like the second one; I ended up just buying potions and charging it madly. But it works. Now for more compliments and nitpicks.

First off, the music. It's not bad; on the contrary, it's really good. That's the problem. It's no exaggeration to say that at least 1/4 of the songs you picked I'm already using in projects I'm working on now (or in the case of one or two, games that I've released already). It's not something I'd mark you off for, it's just annoying to me. Like "Well, so much for having original music in my quests now..."

Second, it's a minor nitpick, but why can't we pick up items with the sword? It bugs me. Minor, yes, but it's very annoying to somebody who's used to doing it.

Third,
Spoiler

On a final note now, I'm on the Skybox. I've got a key, but I can't figure out how to get to the silver chest. I can see it under the grating in the entry room, but I can't figure out how to reach it from the other side of the level. Any tips there?

Well, a lot of that is from the MIDI pack. Not much I can do about that. With a limited supply of both MIDI's and MIDI makers here, there's only so much music. They are all bound to be used multiple times by many different people. Especially the good ones.

Yeah, I'll get on that. But, again, for the DX. I don't want to change anything like that now. But yeah, It's something I'll definitely look at for when this is all said and done. Until this contest is done, all I'm doing is bug fixes. I feel like changing anything else goes against the intent of this contest. But when this is done, and the winner is decided, and such, I'm going to go back through and fix all of this. So, keep giving me your thoughts on it, because when I'm not bound by contest restrictions, I want to make this the best it can be.

QUOTE
Third,

Yeah, actually, the one I bet you're thinking about isn't the only one. The one in the boss den is actually the one that you DON'T have to fight for the best ending. What I'd recommend is edge sniping for now. Later, you can hookshot stun them, which is a big help. Again, when this is all done, I'm not gonna take them out, but I will give them a considerable nerf (I'm talking power cut by 1/4 or so). You're right, that is kind of cheap. I got a little carried away with the difficulty. I killed them all, but it did take a combination of hookshotting, edge sniping, and the addition of a clock in the level 5 battle against them.

So yeah, I'll nerf them significantly for the DX.

It's pretty hard to give a hint for this, so I'll just come out with it.

Spoiler

I'm gonna have to come up with a more obvious way of hinting at that...

So, yeah, keep it coming. The more I know you all'd like fixed, the better I can make it when I do all the adjustments and such.

I feel stupid.

But okay, in level 3. There's a room with three vires, an open chest, and a hamiltonian path. Solving the path does nothing, however. Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Edit: So apparently it only works when the water level is up. That's very bad design there. I'd recommend using Room State Carryovers to allow it to be solved on either water level. And ditch the Vires too please; having to rekill them every time I need to try to solve the puzzle again is really grating on my nerves.

Oh, jeez, I should have seen this coming...

Yes, it's a bug.

I know what I did. Luckily, the fix isn't hard. I hadn't accounted on the player going north across the room and getting the key in the spike room until later, so I only had the key in that chest accessible with the water up, thinking it was needed to drain the water in the first place. A room state carryover and ffc copy later, and it's fixed.

Here, now it should work. Either use this fixed one, or just go into the room when the water on the B1F is still up.

Another Fix

Changes: Level 3 key bug fixed.

EDIT: Just now noticing you edited your post. I changed the vires, but I'm not re-uploading it just for that. It'll be changed for next time something big needs to get fixed.

Okay, so more comments. First, the fire gleeok north of level 3. Wildly unfair doesn't begin to describe him. 9 hearts, blue ring, metal shield, white sword, and 3 potions, and I can't even make a dent in him. There's challenging, and then there's stupid. This is stupid.

That aside, I'm not sure where to look for the other three achievement medals. I have a feeling one of them is behind the closed door south of the achievement shop, but I can't figure out how to open it. Any hints on what to do/where to look for more medals?

With regards to the Gleeok, the blackish-purple fire can be blocked with the metal shield (unlike the regular fire), so just letting it hit your shield is a viable defense strategy. Secondly, I'd come back when you have the level 3 sword, which is in the 4th room of level 4. Third, added to the nerf list, he still was a bit of a pain (this one I might do now, just to get it out of the way), but I was able to do it (I had 9 hearts, blue armor, metal shield, level 3 sword, 3 potions though).

About the medals, I'm not sure which ones you have, and which ones you don't. I couldn't really give you a list without knowing which ones you have. If you could let me know, that'd be great (You said forest, fire, light earlier, and I'd bet you got air, because of the chest, but I don't know which other one you have). And no, there's no achievements behind that door (though it does open with the Level 3 sword to the dome-trigger thing). Everything, and I mean everything in there is optional.

EDIT: WOAH WHAT DID I DO! And by that I mean I must have made it harder after I tested it. Sorry about that, new file, with the original stats...

Here!

Changes:
-Black Fire Gleeok nerfed back to my original stats
-Death Knights nerfed significantly (HP 60->40, Damage 40->16, W. Damage 80->24)

Oh... I didn't even know there was a level three sword. In that case, I'll nab it, then come back to kill the Gleeok, then go to open that door. As for Medals, I've got the four you mentioned, and soon to be a fifth for beating the purple Gleeok.

Ok, fixed version uploading as we speak. Check my last post in a few minutes.

The three you're missing, I'll give you home hints here:

Ice:
Spoiler

Sand:
Spoiler

Dark:
Spoiler

EDIT: Remember, achievements are counted at the level 4 boss. You can leave any time during level 4 to keep looking, as long as it's before the boss (Important for the last one).

Ah... the Ice and Sand were very cleverly hidden. Can't believe I didn't find those the first time. As for Dark, that's what that crystal is for. I've tried hitting it with every weapon so far. It probably wouldn't have even occurred to me to come back with level 4's item, so I would have spent forever trying to find the last medal before I entered level 4. Thanks!
