First off, make sure you play the quest with Zelda Classic, version 1.90, else the quest would not work properly. (While I would like Wild Bill to update this classic to a version 2.10 or later, I think he might have more important things to do at this moment than update every quest he has made so far.)

You need to use the initial 20 rupees to purchase four bombs (or take your chances at gambling to get more rupees and reset if you go broke). Once you have the bombs, look for a sealed cave on the east side of the map and blast your way inside. You will need to use your remaining bombs to wipe out the other enemies. It's overkill, but it is all you have at this point.

Level 1 is in the southeastern portion of the map. Just learn the directions to get through the forest for a very cheap price.

Remember you need to play this quest using the Zelda Classic version it was designed for. I encountered the same problem trying to use version 2.10 to play this. When I tried it with 1.90, I had no problems with the quest (although I have no music coming out).

Do you have the Ocarina yet? If not, I suggest you look for a lake over which you can hookshot your way across. With the Ocarina, you have access to many areas, including Level 2. Just go back to the village entrance and find a spot on which to play your new instrument.

What item did you just receive in Level 2? Try everything on it, but always remember what you added to your inventory!
Meanwhile, I will ask my own question:
I noticed a Heart Container Piece in Level 4 that is isolated in a room with three Pols Voices. The only way to get to it seems to be by passageway, as indicated by the stairway within the blocked-off area. I looked around to no avail. Any hint as to how to get there?
