If you already completed Level 5, you should know better before assuming Level 8 is finished.

Good quest so far.

 

I have entered level 3 from the tree, and get the guy that says to proceed pay attention to how you entered the level.

 

I burned every regular sized tree in the forest, and still can't find the key to get through that first door.

 

What am I missing?

The key is in the entrance room. Push the far left middle row statue.

He says pay attention to how you entered the level, it has nothing to do with the forest or its trees outside. It's about the screen transition. Link doesn't walk in through a doorway.

When I played that level, that was what I understood the words to mean, but I still have no idea how that relates to the actual solution.

in 2.5 Warp returns are used in place of start/continue squares (which are available but obsolete). The fact that Link just appears in the room is an immediate sign that the room has stairs in it. That's what it means.

Here is the path. I don't know if you have the candle all ready so I took you the long way. Take bait with you just in case you haven't been to that  screen yet.

Take the cemetery entrance to Death Mountain. go right, go right, take cave entrance, go right, go down, take stairs, go up, go left, take stairs, go up, go up, go up after giving bait, go right, go right, go right, go right, go down stairs, go down, go down stairs, go right, go right, go down, go down, go right, go up get hammer then run like all get out...

I dont know how i missed that location lol .I am about to enter lvl8 by now.

A voice speaks to Link, telling him a clue to each next dungeon. Never forget these. 

Also, it doesn't seem to be much of an issue but make sure you find Death Mountain's second crystal spring. It is an event trigger.
