haven't crossed the lake except on the rafts.

I have chatted with the old man but his clue is opaque to say the least.

I think I know what to use but not where to use it...unless I'm barking up the wrong tree.

.... remember level 7.  Go along the edge of the lake and keep trying.

Lost again.  Where is level 6?  I've tried the whistle but no results.

I've tried every inch of the coastline of the big lake with what worked in L7 with no luck...wrong lake or am I missing something?

On the screen with the blue lynels, it may help if you are in the center of the screen.  I think I tried whistling while standing in the wrong spot, and nothing happened.

 

To cross the lake, you will need to use your wand on the eastern lakeshore.   When I activated the secret, Link was facing west, toward the lake, and right up against the water when the wand was used.  If it's the right spot, you'll see something appear.  If not, move up/down to the next square, try again one square at a time until you find the right spot.   It's kind of a pain because of the enemies that keep trying to kill you.

If you got both treasures in level 4 you can get to the other end of the overworld.

Well, I managed to get the Power Bracelet in Level 4, but what was the other item?

 

Edit: Nvm, just remembered it was the Red Candle. Derp. Would still appreciate some help to get to the other side of the overworld though.

Gendof - Shoot the bushes with arrows (again), check your overworld map - the bushes that you get rid of should connect to an unvisited screen.

No idea where Level 6 is supposed to be. Explored as much as I can in the northern part of the overworld but I haven't got anything yet. Gonna have to start burning every bush and bombing every wall soon >_<

Did you get the clue to blow your whistle by the two blue Lynels?  There is a screen with three blocks of bushes, two blue Lynels, a green rock wall to the north.

I finally got the tenth heart container.

Would someone please lead me to the magic sword?

For the magic sword, you need the whistle.  Go to the "northern overworld" (this where a totally new overworld map appears if you press the spacebar).   Explore screens not too far from the entrance of this northern overworld, and you should find a screen with 3 green trees missing at the bottom (southern) edge.  Use the whistle there and follow the path back to the southern overworld.
