Ok, this is embarassing.....  I cant even get though level 1.  I seem to need the stepladder, raft, or feather, and cant find anything

You definitely need the ladder to get the raft.
But you will need the raft to get the ladder.

Something is mixed up here. Wait a second... their must be another way to get the ladder from another room.
