Ah, ZC water ... So lovely.

 

It probably has something to do with the water/conveyor interaction. It seems rare enough that I'll chalk it up to "dumb ZC behavior" for now, but if it pops up for others I'll consider reworking that room. Thanks for letting me know.

What determines the name you get for (spoilers):

beating the game as Lucas? Is it purely random?

I've seen 5 different names so far, including the one I got as Loire on Difficult. Are the other names the ones you get for challenges?

 

Also, is it possible to fight the final boss as Lucas without defeating any others? I couldn't find a way around the Lethe fight.

The name you get for beating the game as Lucas depends. If you beat a challenge, you get the special challenge name. If you just play on normal mode (which would normally give you Lucas, who you obviously already have), it randomizes between the first six special character names.

Regarding Lethe, to my knowledge, only a handful of characters can bypass it, all by utilizing the shortcut in stomach in the room with the bone worms and tiles moving over acid.

Emily can use PK Fire to break that block early, while characters with Blink can just move past it.

This means, to my knowledge, only 2 of the 3 main post-game final bosses can be fought with all their buffs in place.

Caelan and Zelda are unable to reach Venter Mortis without defeating the double battle in Lethe, thus The Chained cannot be fought with all their buffs.

If you've seen a total of 5 post-game names, it's tough to say which one you're missing, since beating a normal game with a special character results in random names. If you tell me specifically which names you've unlocked, I could tell you the corresponding challenge to get the last of the basic six. Otherwise, you're rolling the dice on getting the right challenge to unlock the remaining one. However, you might still luck out and unlock an extra character, depending on who you pick. Sorry for being so cryptic. It's tough trying to explain this without spoiling characters you haven't found yet.

I don't think there's anything I can do about it, though. There's nothing funny going on in the editor, no weird tricks or anything. Just land and water. Seems like odd ZC behavior to me.

Are you sure the conveyor wind isn't doing anything to it?

There's no conveyors anywhere near you in that. Conveyors are on the ground on layer 0, with the wind effect layered over them. And I didn't put them within a certain space of screen borders.The nearest ones would be two rows up from you, or all the way on the land to the left by the coin.

I should've been clearer, I was playing as Lucas and got 5 other names, so 6 total. I already got Caelan's name from a Difficult run, so I assume the other 4 are for the 4 challenges in the options menu. Just out of curiosity, could you say (by first initial - EFSZ) which name is for which challenge?

 

Also, I've beaten the game 5 times as Caelan on Normal and I've only seen Lucas's name, so the random names aren't working for him. Haven't tried the others yet.

Here's the learning method for most of the special characters for anyone who's played the basic characters enough and wants something new. Names are hidden, so you can just use this as a guide if you still want to "unlock" them on your own. Edit: Did a quick edit to correct the names to their actual file name instead of just the character name.

Some characters' names are mentioned in-game, not just in their name-learning strings, and could be guessed in advance. All characters in Yuurei are playable.

So, the random name thing only happens if you'd get a duplicate name. Caelan's name is the hard mode reward, and Lucas is the normal mode. So beating Normal will only unlock Lucas, unless you're playing as Lucas, which would result in a random name. You've already discovered the six names (tiers 1 and 2) that can be unlocked this way.

 

I feel like at this point you've poked around enough so I don't really need to make you do another run, so if you'd like to know the three other names that are learnable in game, have a look at the guide above.
