Not exactly "early" in the game, but there are 3 levels of each starter item, however you can only obtain the final form of the one you started with. The starter items will be found in a Treacherous Tower-esque dungeon. (which also uses random warps) There will also be secondary upgrades (arrow, book, etc) for each starter weapon in a different section of the same dungeon, however this section can only be accessed once each starter has been obtained.
