Information
Made for a two week quest contest, Vault of Souls is a relatively short (3-4 hours) quest filled with lots and lots of scripting. Scripted items, enemies, and more. With a full 8x8 overworld, 3 levels that can be done in either order, and two endings, Vault of Souls should provide a few hours of good entertainment.

Description
List of features:
- One full 8x8 overworld
- 3 main dungeons which can be done in any order
- An entirely scripted subscreen, complete with a modern map system and save screen
- A system that lets you upgrade your weapons and purchase new abilities (such as the ability to regenerate health or cheat death)
- Enemies will get stronger as the game progresses, to accommodate for the total non-linearity
- On that note, most enemies and all bosses are scripted
- An entirely scripted arsenal of weapons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, that can interact with the environment
- Two endings (was anybody not expecting this from me?)
- And more!
Story
Dr Devar. A name that had been circulating a lot recently in certain academic circles. An archeologist, in search of an ancient civilization that most scholars agreed was nothing more than legend. He was either determined or insane, depending on who you asked.
He was an ass, though, if you asked Elliot Devar. The archeologist's teenage son didn't have much respect at all for his father. The man was two-faced. Kind and enthusiastic in front of a camera, but mean, almost abusive, when in private. Elliot found his father's field of work fascinating, but resented being dragged around from place to place and being forced to do all the hard work. "Go through this small tunnel, Elliot." "Carry my tools for me, Elliot." "Don't you dare sass off to me or I will make your life miserable, Elliot."
Mean as his father might be though, Elliot never had any reason to suspect he was any more than an egotistical jerk. Until one day, when his father sent him crawling through yet another muddy tunnel in a cave to scout ahead. On the other side though, Elliot found something quite different than normal. A hallway, lined with crumbling pillars, ending in a sealed door. And a glove, and a voice beckoning him to pick up the glove...
Elliot's life collapsed in that moment, as the glove spoke, explaining things Elliot didn't want to hear. His father was searching for something, something called the Vault of Souls. And if he were to find and open it, it would mean catastrophe. Elliot is forced into a search to locate the three key shards to seal the vault before Dr Devar can reach it, in a quest that could ultimately pit father against son in a showdown that, despite how they might act on the outside, neither of them want to happen.
The Vault of Souls is discovered. Hurry, Elliot...

Tips & Cheats
- Explore after every level: the items you get will let you unlock new areas and find helpful upgrades.
- On that note, take advantage of the upgrades and abilities systems. Enemies get progressively difficult as the game goes on, so you gotta make sure you stay ahead of them
- Electricity is strong against water which is strong against fire which is strong against electricity. Therefore, it pays to do the dungeons in a certain order. You can start with any of them, but going around clockwise from there will make things easier for you.

This is a ridiculously neat and inventive little quest. To put this together in 2-weeks is pretty remarkable just in itself. The fact is, the balancing issues are minor and I don't believe it's way too difficult at the beginning - Nothing some minor scripting tweaks couldn't fix. I actually got stuck a few times with where to go next but that was my own dumb fault.
Seriously top-tier contest entry and many fun in-game moments also. Great job Russ!

Mixed bag here. The scripting and presentation is great, but it lends itself to being too far out of the realm of common sense a bit, and the tutorials need to have a way to skip them after previous runs. Also, couldn't find Level 1 (seems to be a relative problem with these entries, people really hid it, and part of being a good designer is to hook your person early). I say 3/5 here, but if polished and redone could lead to some real nice possibilies, so don't be discouraged.

Excellent work! This quest is very fun to play. I loved using the new upgrade system and the new weapons and spells. It's hard at the beginning, but once you get used to the game it works and it's addicting like hell! Many creative ideas were used, as the 3 dungeons and the overworld are very well made and it's hard to believe this was done in just two weeks!
I have seen both endings. The story of this game is really great, as always Russ! Feels very epic when you've got to decide wether you want to seal the vault or not and the final bosses are 'almost' as awesome as in The Darkness Within. So yes, you got my 5 stars there. If you were to make a DX version of this quest, then it sadly can't get any more stars than this one, sorry.

I'm playing this quest.
It's a shame that the quest is unpolished. I like the idea, it has a better concept than your past quests. The quest has freedom and I like to freeze rivers, creative.
But... is nearly unplayable. The balance of difficulty is unfair, there are a lot of custom enemies overpowered... example, the blue wizzrobes. There are various rooms with 5 or 6 wizzrobes and lots of bubbles >.>
Why don't you update it? It can be a cool miniquest with a bit of balancing and other changes.

Russ, is there any chance of you sharing your custom subscreen code for the rest of us? We still lack a scripted subscreen in the DB, after all, and no documentation for making one.
I'm going to give this game a try as soon as I have more than a single hour to myself, merely for the fact that it is so wildly different and I would like to see what you achieved.

Yep, this is definetly a Russ-quest! A deep story and overly long dialogues, spellcasting-based gameplay, scripted enemies, tough difficulty, original music, text-boxes hiding whats going on and the typical walkability bugs.
Though, sorry Russ, this quest is really hard for me to play because while the overworld is nicely designed with lots of secrets it seems, Link starts out like really weak and theres no way to find any of these heart or power upgrades without getting some dungeon items it seems. I appreciate how the quest is not linear but its also hard to know where to go then. I only found a forest dungeon that has way too hard and annoying fire enemies. In the desert I can't find any way to continue because every possible way is blocked off by lock blocks and the mountain area always kills me with it's bombing enemies. Don't know what to do at all.
It would be nice if there was a completely optional and easy "beginners" dungeon somewhere. Please think about that idea, for a update, it would help a lot to get used to the game at first.
