Bingo, that's exactly the purpose. Picking up another of the same weapon just resets it's number of uses. There is a "repair" item, to add more uses (and the repair item can be consumable too). You could foreseeably setup repair shops with it.

While I have it take the item away, you could have a lower level item "dull sword", "stringless bow", so when the script takes away your weapon it shows up as a useless version. Repair shop, or a slightly modified version of the repair item gives you back your fixed item.

As for the whistle, it broke, it's a game. You could call it a magic whistle with only so many uses... Ya, that makes sense.

edit: i have a pretty major update for this coming soon. just fixing a few bugs.
update will fix a minor bug with old script, make inputting counter#s easier, add consumption effect when hitting solid combos, and add some extra little bells and whistles with certain lweapon types.

I don't dabble in ZQ so I wouldn't know, but if re-obtaining the item resets its uses or if it's possible to reset uses through another script, then I think we've got ourselves a way of handling items that need repairs or restocking every so often.

For the sword, hammer, bow, and boomerang, it could probably be considered as something along the lines of durability, whether the blade's edge or the bowstring or whatever else. For the bait, it could probably be explained away as the player obtaining a bag with multiple pieces of bait in it, perhaps the Oracle games' satchel with scent seeds? The magic wand could be said to have a limited number of charges, and the candle should run out of wax eventually.

I'm drawing a blank on how to possibly explain the whistle having limited uses, though.
