from playing zelda classic. I have not played in over a year and had to do a hard wipe on my pc 6 months ago. Today I try and redownload zelda classic I got the 2.55 13 build on windows 11 and something called smart control keeps zelda classic from loading because windows does not recognize it. what is the work around? Sorry if this was out of line to ask. A big thank you to all the creators of various quests over the years.

AV software like Smart Control protect non-technical users from installing evil software. They also are super conservative and have many false positives.

Your options are:

* trust the software you download and tell your AV software to exclude them from its checks (you got ZC from https://zquestclassic.com/, right?)

* disable unnecessary AV if you trust yourself on how to stay safe on the internet

The only action we can take to avoid this, as open source software developers, is to pay MS money every year (not so bad) and re-work how we build the software (a giant headache). So if you trust ZC / us, just tell your AV to ignore ZC.

unless i am a moron which i may very well be i had to send microsoft the exe file and tell them to let me play it. no word on when that will happen. I downloaded the zelda classic file from purezc.net not zquestclassic.com

The Download ZC button on PureZC should just redirect to the zquestclassic.com downloads page. They're the same link.

Can't say I have any experience with Windows Smart App Control so I don't know how or if you can whitelist ZC under it. Stuff I am seeing though sketches me out. Like people saying once you turn it off, you need to do a clean install of Windows to turn it back on again? I find that disturbing. Malicious even.

From what I've read smart control has 3 results it gives for any program you run:

  • "Known Good", ex. Chrome / iTunes installer: it doesn't pop anything up and just lets the program run
  • "Known Bad", ex. something that has been reported and verified as malware: It won't let you run it at all, does not give you an override option
  • "Anything Else", ex. indie games / game engines like ZC: Pops up a scary looking warning that you can just click "More Info -> Run Anyway" to bypass at any time. These warnings serve the primary purpose of scaring people away from programs that don't pay Microsoft's fees to get on the known good list, and are not an indication that anything at all is wrong with the program.
