On May 5th 1862, Mexican Troops under the command of Ignacio Zaragoza successfully fended off French Troops in the Battle of Puebla, causing what was supposed to be a quick French victory to stall out.
The next year the French defeated the Mexican Troops stationed in the same place, and took the capital.
