As per the original announcement, Derisory Substance III was intended to be temporary - my initial post stated that as much:
 

Hopefully it's been long enough. The return of this forum may be temporary - at least until the end of the year - but if it doesn't collapse into a mess, then it might have a chance of sticking around longer than that.

I also posted a follow up post in that same thread stating that the forum would be archived on December 31 - it was closer to January 2 (whoops). Notice was given around the archiving date, and it was very clear from the outset that the forum was more than likely going to be temporary rather than anything permanent.

Variants of the forum might be brought back in the future, particularly because for the most part, there was positive feedback around it. That said, Derisory Substance III served its purpose - that is, to celebrate its 20th anniversary of being created - and we won't be bringing it back. Truth be told, while the forum did bring a burst of energy and shitposting to the site, I think keeping it around any longer than what it was open would not have benefitted anybody.

ngl I think if people like and use the forum it should be kept around. maybe make it so new posts don't show up in the new content feed easier, but I don't see a reason to get rid of it completely

I'd say it lends a bit of a special feel to it, too! Fun events can't last forever, much as sometimes we wish they'd last just a little bit longer - they'd eventually lose what makes them special.

 

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened - and maybe there's more fun times to look forward to in the future.

 

(... man this post feels like I'm channeling myself from like 2005 or 2006 or something.)
