Matthew's map has a nice variety of locales. They are all done rather well and fit nicely within the limited scope. Voted here.

 

HeroOfFire's has a nice atmosphere to it. I'm a complete sucker for the dark, wintry area types. Not the biggest fan of the choice of tree here but everything else works quite nicely.

HeroOfFire has made amazing use of a very risky 4-direction mountain wall setup, and I really like the use of snow as both walls and platform ramps. 6/5 for challenge/boldness of design.

 

Matthew has a perfectly balanced, beautifully crafted worldmap with enough detail tiles to impress, but not overbear or seem "busy."  5/5 for overall execution quality.

For anyone who hasn't noticed, try flipping the map horizontally and "scaling" it upwards. Does it seem familiar?

Matthew: god this is pretty. Even the pink trees that I normally hate in games work really well here. I didn't recognize those pine trees and I really like them, and other people had to point out to me what that building in the northwest was based on and I liked that too. (I know most people aren't spriters themselves and this contest isn't really about having cool unfamiliar sprites, but fuck it, I love cool unfamiliar sprites.) Also the grayscale area in the center, the gray plants are a cool touch there that makes it all the more unsettling. Uhhh...the treetops in the autumn forest look kind of wonky? I get what they're supposed to do but it's still sort of a goofy look.

 

HeroOfFire: I think my biggest problem with this is how monotonous it is, for such a large map. It just feels...padded. It'd be a cool enough concept for a normal-sized area, but a map of this size really needs more landmarks and variety--or just to not be this size.
