It's an altar. There will be flame bursting from the bowl eventually. I also want to add statues to it.

Timelapse - about 8 minutes

Drew this last night on my live stream. Also, I'm going to start uploading timelapses to youtube.

Well, for theming for the personal project I'm using this with, I have four statues in mind:
The four above correspond with themes in a project I'm working on right now.

There is this big fire sprite in the GB tileset (the sprite of the Flame of Despair/Destruction/...and the third one. from the Oracle games) which should have about the right seize. You could try whether it makes a good base for your own sprite.

Hm, I'll probably take a look at that. Although, my intention for the blazer tileset is 100% custom, but as a resource I imagine it would be helpful.
I have drawn fire before though, so animated fire sprites aren't a huge concern for me.

As with the four statues I mentioned previously, there will be four flames that will be used, corresponding with each altar.
Red flame - as you would expect, this is a standard fire
Blue flame - will appear almost as animated ice, or a micro blizzard
Green flame - has a dark core, almost as though it sucks the light out from around itself. Surrounded by a green halo
White flame - a large spark, with lightning arcing from itself.
