Finished (more or less) the subscreens. The main subscreen is where you select your weapons. They're broken into three sets - weapons that are used by the B button, tools on the A button, and magic on the X button. You see a description of each item when it's selected, along with pertinent info (like how many arrows you have or the MP cost of a spell). If you press R you get the equipment screen. This shows your non-selectable equipment like your shield, various rings, and other things like that. Here you'll also see your stats and any objectives or dungeon items. Again, there's a cursor so you can see info about your equipment. But there is one selectable item on this screen--the tech book. Press A on that book and you get the third subscreen--your techniques. There are a total of 12 tech scrolls scattered throughout the quest that improve your B weapons. With the sword you can learn to slash, to fire beams, and various spin attacks. The hammer can perform a quake or super quake attack. The staff (wand) can be imbued with magic, which can be upgraded, and the arrows first can fly further, then can penetrate enemies.

None of these techniques are necessary for beating the quest, but they do add other things to find in mini-dungeons and basements (yes, the basements are back!)

This all came from wanting some of the effects of the scrolls without having a ton of items on the equipment screen.
