How could one have extra item counters in a quest? Like for collectables? Besides sacrificing bombs and/or arrows and such?

In the subscreen editor, go to Edit->New to create a new element. Select "Counter". Once it's created, you'll automatically be brought into its properties. Click on the Color tab to set the text and background color. When you're done there, click on the attributes tab. Here, you can set the font and other properties. Be sure to set your "digits" to at least 1. Under "Item 1," scroll down to select "Script 1." (In spite of its label, you don't need scripts to use it.) Once you've got that set up, you can use the arrow keys to move the counter to where you want it, and exit the subscreen. (You can make it go faster by holding shift while using the arrow keys, and if you use page up and page down you can easily flip through all the elements on the subscreen.)
Now that you've got the counter in place, you need to make the items affect it. Go to the item editor, and then navigate to the "Pickup" tab of the item you want to increase the counter. Select "Script 1" as the "counter reference," set the "increase amount" to whatever you want to increase the counter by, and set "increase counter max" and "but not above" to the maximum you want the counter to reach. You'll want to do this for each unique type of item you want to affect the counter.
If you like, you can put text or a mini-tile on the subscreen to indicate what the counter represents. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please speak up!
