Two-Week Contest Review #10

Nostalrul by Goriya

This fun quest is almost exactly the same as tLoZ in terms of gameplay. You start in an overworld, fight through dungeons, and beat Ganon in the end. Does this mean that it is good or that it is bad? Let's find out!

Gameplay

This quest starts you out in an overworld screen, but in a town area:

zelda001.png

Is that my own house? Yay!

After that, you must find your sword and the overworld opens up from there.

The progression in the overworld is linear, but that's not bad at all. Obviously, this means that dungeons must be completed in a certain order which is fine by me. The overworld is a perfect 8x8 map, which is nicely big for a quest made in two weeks.

In the overworld, a pretty big amount of exploration is required to find all of the dungeons and such. The overworld also progresses nicely, and doesn't open too much once you beat the first dungeon, which isn't bad because you don't have to explore so much and then have nothing to explore later on. There are also some sections in the overworld, which can be summed up into two towns, a forest, and an ice world. It was creative to have them, and I always like to have sections in an overworld.

In addition, the overworld is littered with secrets. There are a lot of them, most of them being heart containers, which are really helpful. The only problem with this is that the secrets are actually really easy to find an would benefit from being hidden more intelligently sometimes. But other than that, it felt rewarding and nice to get all of those heart containers!! :D

Before I move on, I just want to say that rupees were used very nicely! There were shops in the overworld that could sell you very nice items, like the second shop in the game which sold you the magical shield and the white sword! Awesome! Because of that, getting rupees was great since there was no point in the game where you could be super rich, since you had to buy the items in the shops if you even wanted to beat the dungeons.

Now on to the dungeons. I think they were very creatively made, and I really enjoyed them. They were typical NES rooms for the most part, though the room shape isn't always rectangular, which is good! :D I was really pleased with the dungeons, as they really creative and well made. I especially liked Level 3's creativity, because you had to go from an ice side to the fire side to get the items and move on:

zelda031.png

zelda032.png

Ooooh, nice! :D

Another thing about the ice side versus the fire side is that they have different enemies, which I thought was good! Really great job on the dungeons!

Now let's talk about the difficulty flow of this quest. The quest starts out pretty easy, and remains that way through Level 2. However, once you reach the ice part of the overworld, they difficulty increases massively, especially in the dungeon, which in this case is Level 3. Basically, we go from Moblins, Zoras, and Stalfos in Level 2 to Wizzrobes and Level 3 Octoroks in Level 3? I think that is WAY to much of a difficulty spike. And the fact that your equipment isn't much different since there isn't a shop right before Level 3 doesn't help at all. And then once I reach Level 4 with super powered up equipment I was kind of disappointed since Level 4 was underwhelming. The only thing inside was the final boss. Really? I really wish that Level 4 was actually a big dungeon, but, I guess it is what it is.

Before I move on to the next section, I just want to say that this quest does have some puzzles! Yay! Even though they are really simple. I really wish there were more and that there were some harder ones as that would make the puzzles more effective. But at least there are some! :D

Story

This quest doesn't really have a story; it is similar to tLoZ. But this quest is humorous and did make me laugh quite a bit. I guess Goriya is know for that! :D But ya, really like the humorousness! :D

Design Attention

This quest screen design is very solid, and it looks good. Using Goriya's favorite tileset, Revenge, this quest looks good because he uses it well! Also, there were no screen design bugs that I could find, so yay! Now for the screenshots that I know all of you have been waiting for ;).

zelda007.png

zelda017.png

zelda025.png

zelda047.png

Very solid screen design! :D

Now with that said, I did feel that there could have been a bit more detail in the screens, since some of them do fell a little empty. But the screens are still solid so that is good! :D

Now for the dungeon design. The dungeons are very nicely designed, and are nonlinear most of the time. While there isn't many side warps or stuff like that, it is still decent and I enjoyed the dungeons nicely. Very solid and great job on that! :D

Music

The music of this quest is very good, and very well chosen. I really like it, to be honest. Each section of the overworld has different music, which is good because it defines those areas much more effectively. Also, the new sound effects make everything seem fresh, which I really liked. The sound effects were really good on that note too. All in all, the sound area of this quest is phenomenal and was very nicely chosen and picked out.

Concluding Thoughts/Summary

Nostalrul is a must-play quest that is also very fun and solid though it does suffer a bit from difficulty balancing issues and easily found secrets that would otherwise make this an almost perfect quest.

Strengths

  • Solid overworld and solid progression
  • Nice use of rupees in terms of shopping
  • Creative and nicely designed dungeons
  • Some puzzles
  • Humorous dialogue and "story"
  • Decent screen design with no bugs
  • Amazing music and sound effect choices

Weaknesses

  • Easily found secrets
  • Sharp difficulty spike around Level 3
  • Underwhelming Level 4
  • Some screens were a little empty

Rating: 8.5/10 (Great)

 Database Rating: 4/5 (Good)

Well, actually, hold off for that a little. I'm going to be leaving for like 1 hour right now, but when I get back I'll finish what I've already started (like 5 lines....). Anyways, see you then! ;D

Two-Week Contest Review #11 (Final)

Xavier's Epic Quest by a30502355

This quest has been obviously made with the tLoZ gameplay in mind. You only have 4-way movement, the quest uses the classic tileset, and you progress very similarly by going through dungeons that feel the same as the ones in the first Zelda. Now, let's find out if this is a good or bad thing! ;)

Gameplay

Before I get to anything, I just want to say: THIS QUEST HAS 9 DUNGEONS!! WOW, is all I can say. For a quest made in only 2 weeks, that is rather very impressive. While it may be rushed a little, having 9 dungeons in a quest worth 2 weeks of your time is really impressive, especially if you compare that number to the other quests in the two-week contest. So really good job on that. Now...

The quest starts you off in a beautiful overworld screen, just like tLoZ:

zelda001.png

Nice screen, but what's in the cave? A sword, of course! :D

Anyways, after that, you have a pretty big chunk of the overworld to explore and find items and dungeons. The overworld progression in this quest is fairly linear, so after beating certain dungeons you can open more areas up. However, the dungeons in the area that you already have opened don't necessarily need to be done in order, but I did it in order anyways :D.

The overworld is also full of shops and has a bit of secrets as well. One of the best shops I found before even entering Level 1 was this:

zelda010.png

The blue ring!!! Yes!!

Good think I had enough money for that. I was able to defeat Level 1 SO easily. But you stick to the blue ring until much later in the game so it'll get less and less useful later on. But still really nice to have early.

In addition to that, you get lots of money in the overworld by "freeing people", as they say in the game. But it is really useful as then you can buy lots of the items in the shops that you need to buy. This means that rupees were used fairly well, as I usually didn't max out except in the last dungeon, where at that point I had already bought everything possible.

Now for the dungeons. They were typical NES rooms, but this isn't really a bad thing. I enjoyed the dungeons, and they had some really interesting colors. Also, they introduced new enemies that aren't even in tLoZ, which keeps the energy high even though you have powerful equipment already. So this is obviously a big plus. Let me share some of the enemies that were introduced:

zelda031.png

Yes. I'm not even kidding xD.

zelda060.png

Oh geez. Bomb throwing Wizzrobes? RUN!! :D

So yes, those were always fun to come across. And there are more in the quest, no worries! Now for the difficulty of the quest.

The difficulty lies around the middle; it isn't too hard nor too easy. This is really nice, as it is pretty balanced. While the first three dungeons were very easy, the difficulty curve occurred in Level 4. Also, the curve isn't really very drastic like it sometimes happens, which is good, as you don't get stuck trying to beat the same area over and over again. So plus for that as well. Nicely implemented difficulty curve, and average difficulty after that. Before I move on though, I just want to say that Level 9 was more challenging than average, but the final boss was a little too underwhelming, I have to say (and you should know who the boss is). That shouldn't be hard to fix, however; just increase its health and damage. I didn't even need to use a single potion to beat the final boss, but for the actual dungeon, I did need to use them. So that should be something that can be changed.

Anyways, let's move on to puzzles. Well, (again) there aren't any. This quest uses quite a bit of enemy shutters, and it would be nice if there were some puzzle shutters as well. But oh well, I guess.

Story

This quest doesn't have any different of a story than tLoZ. Beat Ganon and save Zelda. :D

Screen Design

This quest's screen design is very good and nicely made. In general, every screen looked like there was some effort into it, and none looked like there wasn't, so that's always good. They may have needed a bit more detail, but for a 9 dungeon quest made in only 2 weeks, that's not so bad. Anyways, on to the screenshots as usual:

zelda005.png

zelda006.png

zelda016.png

zelda029.png

zelda051.png

Nice screen design. :)

However, there are some screen design bugs, and not just 1, but more than that. While nothing major and game-breaking, this can be an issue. Here is one screenshot of a bug that I'm going to share:

zelda053.png

Um, I'm in the mountain tile!?!?

And another one where it looks like a cave that you can get something from:

zelda052.png

Um, okay?

So yes, those were some of the bugs that I found, but not all of them. Even if the quest was rushed a bit, these shouldn't really be that hard to find.

Now let's move on to the dungeon design. The dungeon design in this quest is really good, but it can be a bit too linear at times. Not enough splitting paths is what I'm trying to get at. There could be more, and that would make it less linear. But still good dungeon design, and the dungeons were fairly long as well. As for the room design, they were always good, without really any empty rooms at all. This is really good. What isn't good is this:

zelda068.png

Are you serious?

Yes. This pisses me off a lot. You are literally going to make me take lots of damage and stumble around everywhere, to get an item that I need to progress with this quest? That's cruel. I don't like that at all. I am aware that you can use the Roc's feather to escape the traps somewhat, but with the sheer number of them, it is almost physically impossible anyway. And there are rooms like this where you need to bomb a wall to move on. To be honest, I just hate these kinds of rooms. Sorry, but that's just me ;). But at least there weren't many, I guess.

Before I go to the music of this quest, there is another fairly big problem with how the dungeon was designed. Sometimes, in a couple of dungeons, the key placement and the locked door placement made it possible to get stuck in the dungeon, which really isn't a good thing. That is one problem. Good think I was able to catch the error before I fell into the trap. So be careful next time with this, please.

Music

The music in this quest is very nice! I really enjoyed it, and it fits the theme very nicely, which enhances the quest itself a lot. Really good music choices, and thoroughly enjoyed this category. Good job!

Concluding Thoughts/Summary

Xavier's Epic Quest is a very solid quest, that while it has some errors that can be just screen bugs or that can annoy, is very well made. Definitely still worthy of playing, as well!

Strengths

  • HUGE size for a quest made in 2 weeks
  • Nice overworld progression
  • Nice shops and secrets hidden around the overworld
  • New enemies that keep the energy high in later dungeons
  • Balanced difficulty with fair difficulty curve
  • Good overworld screen design
  • Good dungeon design and room design, for the most part
  • Great music choices

Weaknesses

  • Final boss was underwhelming
  • No puzzles
  • Screen design bugs
  • Trap rooms
  • Key placement can be a game-ending scenario

Rating: 8.1/10 (Great)

Database Rating: 4/5 (Good)
