Is Koh the only one here who really likes the games in this series? Here's one of Koh's videos for the oblivious. Koh is in the bottom left =x. Third person posts ftw.

For the curious, we did get a few games in English, but for the most part the rest were never localized. But these aren't the sort of games that need to be in English to be playable.

Interestingly enough the series started one year after that. But these are more engaging, since it's competitive style. Also, the series has some very interesting characters =).

You know what's funny? The art style took a major change when Sega took over. It used to look like this:

And yes that's another one of my Puyo videos. I have a ton of them, and there are still a ton more on the way, so if you want to see moar =x...

I tried to get into Puyo Puyo a few times with Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, but I just couldn't. The basic puzzle mechanic just feels kind of weird to me. I know that sounds strange since it's still matching, but there are a lot more directions to match and the way it throws junk at you from opponents is annoying to me. icon_shrug.gif

I prefer puzzle games like Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League). icon_razz.gif

Those are the worst games to start with actually. I say that, because they play with Puyo 1 Rules. With Puyo 1 Rules (as shown in my first video in the OP), you CANNOT counter nuisance/garbage Puyos. So whatever is sent your way, you HAVE to take it. from Puyo Puyo 2 and onwards and every subsequent game, they introduced Sousai, also known as countering. Someone chains and sends nuisance Puyos your way, you can chain and counter that, reducing how much you take, not taking any altogether, or overpowering it and sending nuisance Puyos to your opponent. If you're both active enough, it becomes a round robin chain fest XD. Also, with Puyo 1 Rules, you cannot rotate upside down, or use the extra row above the screen to move around high stacks.

Action speaks louder than words. Here's another one of my videos of Puyo Tsu, showing what I mentioned above. The game where it was introduced.
Video in here

I think it would be really great to play it with someone on here =). Battling the CPU is nice and all, but I never got to have the vs human experience.

I am familiar with and... Not a fan but an advocate of the Puyo Puyo series. I own Puyo Puyo 2 on my Virtual Console and I have to say it's one of the best of the series... Though I haven't played a lot of them. xD

By the way, to give some background info, Puyo Puyo was one of the originators of competitive-oriented puzzle games, as most puzzle games at the time were similar to Tetris and were mostly single player, or if they did have 2-player there wasn't a huge focus on beating your opponent. So saying that this game is like another is almost like saying Dragon Quest is similar to Final Fantasy. The game never really caught on with the West but it was still a major influence for games like Puzzle Fighter and Panic Bomberman.

Too bad Compile, the company that developed the games, went out of business.

But Sega owns the series now, and they've been doing a good job of keeping it alive. 20th Anniversary was extremely nice, especially since every character had their own little story. Of course since it was never translated, it just flies over your head, but just the fact that they're developing ALL the characters is more than enough =). I do miss Compile versions though. You should try Puyo Puyo SUN. You can download it for free on PC now if you do a Google search, provided by Puyo Nexus.
