I wanted to share some of what I've been working on. My latest quest is inching closer and closer to completion, and developing it has really deepened my love for dungeon design. Here's some of what's in store :)

These screens are too symmetric. Prepare to die.

Excellent shots all around, Matthew! From what I've seen of that project, I'm especially impressed with the sideview work you've done. I look forward to more from this project.

One takeaway I've personally appreciate from the shots you've posted is your careful balance of detail vs clarity which I think emphasizes larger geometric shapes (e.g. crisscrossing rectangles made by rugs/floor tile patterns). It's something I've been trying to keep in the back of my mind ever since I picked ZC back up a few years ago.

post a screenie

Okay posts a screenie

This is not the final palette I want at all, and there are some placeholder graphics, but making a castle foyer with some puzzle elements work here. Might post again once it's been through some revisions if that's interesting to see.

I wonder if the coloured shutters should have distinct patterns, for potential colourblind reasons. Beyond that, this looks amazing, eager to see what refinements are made.

I think there will definitely need to be some updates to those. Right now there's a semi-major problem where when the doors are open, you can't tell what color they were. It's not something you'd need for this room in a vacuum, but taking into account the rest of the dungeon, I think it's necessary information.

Perhaps a symbol embedded in the wall around the door? Solves both the coloblind problem and the door open problem.

Could also a do symbol on the door itself, and on the floor when it's open.

I've had a similar problem in my quest and this was my solution:

I put little markers on the buttons & related doors. Might be something similar works for you.

Anyway, I love your screen work also, looks good.

Oh hey, I recognize those walls.

Those dungeon walls look great. Are they original? I love the wave patterns, and also that feeling of like bathroom or pool tiles higher up. Really sells the water theme.

Yeah.

Anyway, decided to pull myself away from my other, non-ZC projects for long enough to put together another dungeon set. This one's a bit more noncommittal thematically:

once again I'm making mockups of dungeons before finishing the prior ones, oh well

Some revisions of the earlier screen. This one was doing some rough palette work using ZC's color editor, and adding more color indicating banners to each door. Colorblindness is still an issue with this though.

I did some further mods to the palette, bringing the highlights more in line and adding more red/purple to the colors. I've also started doing some symbols for the red/blue doors on the bottom screen, but nothing for the green and yellow yet. I don't think these are quite there yet (not differentiable enough at a glance) but they're decent and adding to the theme. Maybe one more round for a final version.
