I've done part of Temple 9; have all or almost the items besides the Raft.
When I attempt to use another entrance to the next part of Temple 9 I'm forced to turn around and exit. Is this normal? I get the feeling the game's glitched and I'm stuck unable to finish the game. Is there an in-game solution to this mystery?

Ok - Here is what you do.
Just as you enter the doorway - press your F6 button.
This will take you to the < continue / save/ retry > menu.
Press < continue > and it should work.
Worked for me the first time.
