Post your end of the world theories here (I don't know if this should move somewhere else). It could actually happen in a very long time! I got one myself:

The Andromeda Galaxy might collide to the Milky Way in 1200 years.

Remember: The theories can be made up or it could be real. You can even say the famous ones too because mabye some people in this forum don't know most of them!

You can even talk about the universe here too.

I don't have an end of the world theory, but I do have an end of the universe theory: There will never be an end of the universe.

As for the colliding of galaxies, I think 1200 years is astronomically short sighted. If I was to assume such a thing ever happening, and nothing else destroys it first, I would put the number of years in the billions or trillions category.

Well it's obvious the universe will never end but some scientists say that there will be a Big Crunch theory or the Big Rip theory. I got another end of the world theory anyway:

A meteor will pass through our solar system in about 1 billion years and will collide on Earth starting with the Pacific ocean.

A leading question perhaps? Nothing will happen 2012..., I could be wrong though but I can't get any of the 2012-theories working. icon_neutral.gif

And I am a religious person, but since I can't prove any of my theories, no need to get into a discussion about such things. icon_wink.gif

Good thing that the 2012 theory can easily be proven or disproven by simply living through that year. I certainly don't have one nervous bone in my body about it, since like most people, I don't believe any of it. But any theory somebody comes up with, somebody is bound to believe it, and they still have every right to, regardless of what I think of them.

Yeah, I agree there is no need to get into a science vs. religion discussion, just because of the vast differences in how the theories and statements are established in each. One is based on proof and disproof, thus the burden of proof is always with that. The other is based on faith, assumption, and/or obedience, and thus the burden of proof is never with that.

Well if you look at my second picture in my signature, there is a life cycle of a massive star. The life cycle can be with any star. This may be a possible end of the world theory as the sun grows to a red giant and may engulf the Earth (in the next 5 billion years).

Well now I had to delete the second picture so now you can only see the solar system with an exoplanet (Nibiru).

Nothing lives forever. There's high chance that earth will one day pass onto history or simply not exist anymore.

That's very true. Actually there is a certain end of the world - Red Giant Stage of the sun's life cycle: It may engulf the Earth with it!

Here are my theories:
1) The moon will crash into the planet in exactly 3 days.
2) A stupid fish will wake up, taking this entire dream with it.
3) A very eccentric teenage high school girl will get annoyed and giant blue blobby things will destroy everything.
4) A silver-haired maniac will send a meteor into the planet. *Stares coldly at someone on the forum.*
5) Many many nukes go off and turn the world into a nuclear waste land where people were kept in vaults...or something.

Okay, seriously, I don't really believe in dooms-day theories. If the world were to end tomorrow, I'd honestly rather not know about it so that if it were to happen, I wouldn't know until it was too late. This way, I just go on living life normally for however long there is. Of course, that's just me. icon_razz.gif

As for the long run...I dunno. I never really try to think about the end of the world, as I said above. It's just something I don't think about.

Where did you get this figure...my understanding is that it is more like billions of years...4.5 billion.

In roughly the same time-frame the sun will expand and engulf the earth...though the earth would fry long before it is swallowed.

I think the planet will be around until one of those two events occurs...or some sort of world ending Black Swan event occurs.

But the end of life on earth...

I think the most likely scenarios (and I don't think they are highly likely, but likely enough to worry about) are the following:

A.) An asteroid will hit the earth... though Gregg Easterbrook makes it sound more likely that this will happen in the near term than it actually is

B.) Nuclear armageddon: Stephen Hawking is concerned about this too.

We need to get off the planet. No joking. Seriously, we need to start colonizing other places so we don't have all our eggs in one basket.

I have one word to say to the 2012 theory.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAX.

*ehem*

They've been making up theories about the worlds end for decades now, none of which have ever been true. Regardless of the "It will be within our lifetime" crap, I don't believe this world is going anywhere anytime soon. If it does, it's humanities fault. Not an irregular happenstance.

The end of the world doesn't exist. The end of the human race does exist though. Did the comet that hit earth 65 million years ago destroyed the earth? No, it didn't. Did it end the world for the dinosaurs? Yes, it did. They became extinct. Something similar will happen to the Human Race though. Probably not anytime soon, but our descendants will surely live through it.

When the sun's a red giant, it might cook the Earth but then if it doesn't engulf it, what will happen?
