I installed Ubuntu, and then XChat for Ubuntu. Now what do I do? I set a screen saver and a desktop background and a theme, so... what's one of the most fun and time consuming thing you think a computer geek like myself would like about Ubuntu Linux? This is version Feisty Fawn, or v7.04, by the way.

From what I've seen, I'd say it'd be the Beryl 3D Desktop Environment. However, I'm willing to guarantee that that takes a crapload of RAM

Heh. Not gonna do the Desktop Effects or any of the Beryl crap. Anything else fun a geek like me could do? Oh, and where is the Linux build of ZC?

Thanks, I'm enjoying Ubuntu, period. It's just that, if Windows didn't run everything I have (running on dual boot), then I'd, as Sephiroth said he'd do under the same condition, "switch in a heartbeat."

I'd be running Ubuntu right now. But here's the thing. I have an eMachine. For some crappy reason, NO version of Ubuntu will load itself without crashing. I've tried getting help for that, but... you know how Linux help support forums can be. If they don't like your question, they pretend you don't exist. Somebody may ask the same exact thing 24 hours later and get an answer in minutes.

... Anyway, I won't need Ubuntu anyway when I get one of these. Who needs Linux when you can get an operating system with loads more software available (Photoshop, Flash, *shudder* Office.. quite a few games as well), is several times easier to set up the way you like it and use, and that ISN'T Windows? (But can still run Windows for those things one can't get anywhere else, such as the MapleStory client.) I don't see the point. No flaming intended, I'd love Ubuntu for this thing. Just imagine-- doing my daily eLiving without having to worry about viruses or RAM usage.

I understand whole heartedly about the No Linux Software thing... I don't plan to use it for anything other than office support or things I don't have to compile myself. Xubuntu runs perfectly on 128 megs of ram, so thats merely an office type computer with no other purpose than to save important documents... Windows XP on 128 megs of RAM? That idiot thought it was a good idea when I sent it to get it fixed... </rant>

If that's all you need, and you're not against piracy, you should look into trying to get a copy of Windows AlphaBetas off the net somewhere. It's basically an unofficial version of Windows 2000 that's hacked away Internet Explorer to dramatically improve performance (or something like that). It runs on surprisingly little resources. Even my Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop runs that version of Windows with half-decent speeds.

What I use ubuntu for

• Internet, E-Mail, AIM, Chat
• Listening to Radio 2
• Programming, ZC development
• Basic office tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets in OpenOffice 2.0
• Keeping private stuff private with encryption software
• Running my own private web/ftp server for exchanging photos and stuff with friends
• Tetris
• Making backups from the other computer
