Hard to believe it's been a year since the last one, isn't it? We have three outstanding brackets for you. Come reflect on the best maps of 2016 and cast your votes for those you want to see in the finals.

Voting for these preliminaries ends Monday, January 16. That's only about two weeks away, so please cast your vote early. The three maps that win will compete for the title of Map of the Year 2016 over the remainder of the month.

Seriously boring bracket-seeding details

Whoops, you didn't mean to expand this section, did you? Well, as promised, I'll describe why the brackets are arranged the way they are.

We start off by assigning each map a seed based on how well that map did during its Map of the Month contest. Specifically, we take the number of votes that map got and add it to the margins by which the map beat other maps in the contest. More successful maps get lower-numbered seeds. In the case that multiple maps have the same "success," the seed is determined randomly among the tied maps.

This is the fifth year we've used this seeding scheme. I like it because it is entirely objective and it controls for contest size. This year had some unusually competitive contests, though, and frankly, I think some lower-ranked maps may be underrated. Still, I refuse to rearrange maps on this subjective basis.

For each bracket, we want the highest-possible seed to face off against the lowest-possible seeds. (This helps dominant maps pass to the finals, which is a good thing because it encourages a competitive final round.) We do this within the restriction that, wherever possible, maps created by the same member shall not be pitched against one another in the first round.

Nominally, the brackets would be arranged as...

• 1 v. 10 v. 11 v. 12
• 2 v. 7 v. 8 v. 9
• 3 v. 4 v. 5 v. 6

But because this would make Polaris (#1 and #11) compete against himself, we trade his lower-ranked map's position for the 9th seed's position to form the following bracket.

• 1 v. 9 v. 10 v. 12
• 2 v. 7 v. 8 v. 11
• 3 v. 4 v. 5 v. 6
