I'm trying to find out if I can make Link start a quest without a shield. I was able to find only two threads on this...one I didn't understand icon_blink.gif, and the other said it couldn't really be done (but it could be faked).

I can't seem to uncheck the "small shield" option in the Init Data. If I just edit the Link tiles to not have a small shield, then won't he still deflect rocks (that might be kind of amusing, apparently blocking rocks with his forhead, but not what I want)?

Here are the two threads I was able to find...

There's no way to do it in 2.10. Sorry, but the best you can do is fake it.

You can make Link start without a shield if you use a 2.11 beta. But they can be buggy. You're better off sticking with 2.10 and just dealing with Link starting with a shield.

Use the shieldless sprites for the small shield and prohibit the player meeting any shooter enemies before he/she can get the L2 shield. Or start with a cutscene with shieldless sprites and give a shield immediately before the real gameplay starts.

The best way to do this that I can think of in 2.10 is to create player sprites without the shield starting out and either not have any enemy encounters at all or avoid encounters with enemies armed with projectiles which is difficult since the majority of weaker enemies in the beginning rely on projectile attacks to bolster their weak stamina ratings. Then at some point before the core plot begins allow the player to acquire an item that appears to be the Small Shield. This might be best effected as Castchaos suggested by some sort of cutscene since assigning the shield to a dummy item is difficult to do and renders that item useless as a gameplay element. This idea would best be used for say kind of like the situation in The Wind Waker where Link doesn't get his shield until he's about to actually embark on his quest proper, and encounters little to no enemy activity until that point. Unfortunately with 2.10 your options for these types of concepts are quite limited and you have to circumvent these restrictions with clever ideas such as cutscenes and things of that nature, much in the same manner that custom boss enemies are accomplished with clever use of tiles and triggers. With newer builds it is possible to actually have the Small Shield as an item and by extension allow it to be eaten by Like Likes along with other items you specify, but the nature of betas can make this feature unstable and riddled with bugs. Just pick your poison and see what you can make of this idea.....
