The pink things moves forward, I think it's trying to grab me? The green treeish monster just paces while I shoot it, it might have a different behavior if I get close. (When I came at it from the left side it started moving toward me more, but it doesn't seem like its heart is really in it.)

e89qEZ3B_o.png
Left is impassable for now.

SlrEAGXx_o.png
This is a "Surfacing is mandatory" area, not a "Surfacing does nothing" area. Got it.

It's not visible right now, but there's a clam monster in the water. It interferes with my shots whether it's above the water or below, but sometimes emerges and is visible.

rMHO13Yj_o.png
The lizard guy moves slowly. One of those things where he might be worse if I ever let him get close.

This water entrance is full of those awful clams. Ugh ugh ugh.

CII6RwPM_o.png
It doesn't seem to go anywhere.

wugWz5Se_o.png
Sign:
IT'S FINALLY HERE!
SALMON SEASON!
Man:
"Red for dogs, blue for cats. Don't forget."

Hmm.

8KQ9LYjy_o.png
This man's a healer, so that's nice.

CnjDVr9w_o.png
There's two screens like this, not super notable. Then I find a house.

HMqvIWWz_o.png
Man:
"There's a rumor going around that a guy in a big town called Ronef is getting a can opener."

They're not even trying not to be ridiculous.

jUwUyHYV_o.png
Girl:
"At the end of this grove, you'll find a spot where you'll want to bring a friend."
Old Woman:
"Can't someone help me with my work...?
What? You? It's not as easy as it looks, you know."

The old woman, um...I have to turn into a Yone to get her attention.

"Can't someone help me with my work...?
Oh! Look at you, in Yone form! Thank goodness!
But...I'll just accept the sentiment. I can't let someone who has no idea what they're doing do my work for me.
But still! Let me give you some kind of thanks for your kindness.
Will you bring me a can and a can opener? I'll give you a present if you do."

I...think I just got racismed at?

u4iBQWhJ_o.png
I give her the goods anyway.

"Ah, you've got them. Let me see, let me see...
...... ......
Ta-da! There you go!"
Ami got I Love Cats!
"Take this and go to Shokuan. It'll be a surprise!"

I talk to her again.

"Oh? You can take male forms? I'll give you this, too."
Ami got I Love Dogs!
"That's all I have to give you."

LCcKbFv0_o.png
Fortunately, Shokuan is right next door.

Woman:
"This building might not look like much, but it's still Shokuan's. He does his job right no matter where he is."

O15jgQUa_o.png
Shokuan's got pretty much the same speech here as he did with the Calling Card. I unlock two new forms this way.

xfiXYwMj_o.png
Cat. (Technically Tama, which as far as I'm aware is not in fact a cat. But I'm calling it Cat.)

It has 19 skills. Most of them are S-types.

P Bonus2
ゲンキと トクシュの げんかいが けっこう あがる
Increase HP and MP.
P わりびきけん Better Shopper
にちようひんが すごく おかいどくになる
Daily necessities become very cheap.
P ねこセット Cat Set
りっぱなねこに なるためのセット ツメと キバを そうびできる
A set of claws and teeth you can use to be a better cat.
P License25
ツメを そうびできるし とくいになる
Equip claws, and be good with them.
P License43
すずを そうびできる
Equip bells.
P せいちょうき Growth Spurt
あるいてる だけで けいけんを つむ
Build up experience just by walking.

Growth Spurt could be good. Skill points are more interesting to me than XP, since my main goal is to get all 90 classes, but beating things up faster never hurts either. I don't really want to read the 13 S-types, so I don't.

xBz5swry_o.png
Dog.

Dog has 13 skills instead of 19. Again, I'm just going to skip straight to the passives.

P Dog Set
P Bonus 3 (just straight up better than Bonus 2)
P Better Coupon (equipment costs even less)
P License24
P License42
P Growth Spurt (just the same skill)

c2Du5MhF_o.png
Since I have the prerequisites, I also unlock Spy, securing a 3x furry combo by complete coincidence.

S* さいみん Hypnosis
S のろいのろい Condemnation
M あんじ Hint
M ふういん Seal
L てんぺんちい Disaster
L だつりょく Weakness
てきを ピヨらせる ワナをはる
Make a trap that inflicts Stun.
L ていし Standstill
てきを うごけなくする ワナをはる
Make a trap that makes it impossible to move.
L ちょうおんぱ Ultrasound
てきを ドクにする ワナをはる
Make a trap, presumably one that inflicts something.
P シーク
A little TOUGHNESS, DEX, AGILITY.
P License02
Wield all the knives and be good at it.
P レット
TOUGHNESS, DEX, AGILITY
P エージェント Agent
Lots of TOUGHNESS, DEX, AGILITY

I work backwards with a lot of these, since I care more about passives than the others. Seems like this class sets traps that inflicts conditions all the way down.

-

I also check what classes I can unlock:

Tengu, via Warrior Monk
Sniper, via Spy
White Kenshi, via Bishop + Shaman. Black Kenshi might have also been here before, but I A-ranked on the way here.

Sniper's the most interesting, but I'll finish off Tengu first just because it should be fast. Warrior Monk is already A-rank.

SfivHrtj_o.png
The giftbox contains Crocodile Seeds.

UhCUEv2I_o.png
Going back here, I realize that I'm actually faster than the water trying to keep me from going right.

CnMdX3xu_o.png
Cat is blue, huh.

I take the cat form. It warps me to the opposite square.

There's a boss ahead.

cOtw6oHD_o.png
This is Killer Pine. It hovers around.

8AXazSlD_o.png
Occasionally it launches out a disc of what I guess is a cross-section of itself.

jsLhl9lm_o.png
Not really much else to say. This is a fight that poses absolutely no threat against range, I had range, the end.

oOe88mSq_o.png
Here's the sheet. This is one of those ones where I like the concept okay, but it's so far outside of the Zelda GBC style that I'd have to basically redo it from the ground up, and at that point I might as well just make my own boss. I think I'll be giving this one a pass.

The warp works now. I'll check it out next time.

Time to take the warp.

1mNvOTx2_o.png
I have a few routes here.

0XgLKOSb_o.png
I go south first, which gets me Tonkatsu and also lets me max out Warrior Monk.

qyvh5uQ0_o.png
Over the bridge is Curry.

A6F7ds05_o.png
The top fork in the river lets me loop around and get Mountain Fruit.

Then I backtrack to Shokuan for a second. I've got two new forms.

G507KNZc_o.png
Tengu.

S* はどう
S デコピン
S てんやもの
M でしゃばり
M けんこう
M はなたかだか
L しっかりもの
L つるのまい
P License14
すべての グローブを そうびできるし とくいになる
Wield all the gloves and be good at it.

Does anyone read these skills? I'm going to continue.

eL6JHinJ_o.png
Sniper. One of the ones where the portrait is actually kind of badass.

M* ゼロショット Zero Shot
L スクランブル Scramble
L キルショット Kill Shot
L スピンガン Spin Gun
P License20
すべての じゅうを そうびできるし とくいになる
Wield all the guns and be good at it.

Well, I know what I'm dropping everything to get. (Actually this won't matter immediately, I think; I haven't acquired any of the fancier guns that this would give me access to. But still.)

At this point, I can get:

コパ, via Tengu + Shaman
White Kenshi, now just Shaman left
Hermit, via Tengu

I have no idea what コパ (Kopa) is. I'm going to put off naming the class until I do.

At this point I have 38/45 of the female classes. Fewer for the males, but those shouldn't be too much trouble to fill out at the end.

fm3pQoeS_o.png
Back to where I was before, I start circling around via the bottom fork in the river. The gift is Snake Seeds.

pVVfPSpb_o.png
PSA: don't fight those clams in the water. They can telefrag you. Just pass through as quickly as you can, trusting the currents of the river to speed you along...

bYIfCXO5_o.png
...into another boss fight.

Yv0soKMB_o.png
Decapiranha spends most of the fight underwater and invulnerable, occasionally leaping out with a bite attack. This isn't hard to avoid, since I can easily see where he is.

0zxUbqVf_o.png
Once he's taken some damage, he starts making these big waves as he splashes back into the water. These are tougher, although honestly that's mostly my fault for being averse to walking into the currents. I'm faster than they are, it's not like I'm going to drown.

BsdluW1M_o.png
Anyway, he goes belly-up eventually.

rh4c4ONU_o.png
The sheet's definitely gonna need more love than this to make it GBC Zelda-compatible. I think I can get it there, though.

zksAp91X_o.png
Anyway, that wraps it up for Badesu Forest.

3Kb3XAJe_o.png
These Grasslands, I believe, are the last area in the game.

JWbHhPeM_o.png
Unfortunately, they are blocked. Stepping on that patch of ground will open the path, but only while I'm standing on it. The only way to see what's deeper in is through multiplayer. And my emulator, BizHawk, doesn't have multiplayer functionality.

This is really anticlimactic, I was afraid of this. What's a BizHawk user to do?

.............................

pl99ICRp_o.png

Please hold that thought for a second.

EPKugj01_o.png
Okay! Tune in next time to explore the Grasslands.

(This actually took waaaaaaaay more than a second, and I needed Moosh's help to bail me out here. Somehow I managed to find two completely wrong X position variables that changed when I moved but didn't do anything when I manipulated them, and I'm still not sure where I went wrong!)

South first. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to cross that mud. But I have an anklet, I'm speedy, so I can do it anyway.

The monsters don't seem super notable. The red one really wants to get to me but got caught on the rock until I could shoot it down. I have no idea what the other one even does.

c6FlP3Mo_o.png
Ah, they did anticipate this. The gift is Crude Medicine.

jyNtynSI_o.png
Heading west, it seems like those red lion guys don't actually notice me instantly. They don't start charging until I walk close, before then they just chill in one spot without moving at all.

w8pYrQFL_o.png
Sign:
BEING IN THIS POND HURTS

The sign is hard to translate, but I think this is the gist of it. I walk in as an experiment. Sure enough, I take damage.

Painkiller expected. Got it.

Both signs say the same thing. East is just another path to get here from the start, so let's head west.

0LCb6tmA_o.png
I'm pretty sure those are spikes on the ground, which...I already have Painkiller equipped, guys, I put it on last screen.

cpeM7Buq_o.png
Oh hey, new rock tiles.

Those tiny stones beneath them are impassible, incidentally.

g8UwsZSA_o.png
There's a spot to enter the water from this screen, but I'll have to come back from above.

rUaJTcMb_o.png
Ah, a slightly longer route, then. I go right and up.

XvOnA6Ev_o.png
I believe the money cap in this game is 60000 yen, which I have, so I leave Tabitha alone. Hopefully there's a shop here where I can acquire the fanciest gun money can buy soon.

gPvp2wyK_o.png
Well, there's a house, at least!

4Ajo7Ti3_o.png
Girl:
"My friend in Kools, she says she's learned every single technique. You're in Kools, too, aren't you? Have you learned all of them?"
>no
"Hah! Stupid hick!"
Old Man:
"If you ever defeat all the monsters, come to me."

The first one isn't going to happen. The second one seems reasonably attainable, although I'll have to go to Sanque Mountains and beat up one of those sheep that I left alone when I actually went through the area because I was a good person. But I'm not that good a person, because I kind of hate those things by now.

77ozU0jY_o.png
Finally, a place to enter the water. Those fish sometimes flash, and sometimes spit a crude water projectile at me that doesn't travel very far. This doesn't really feel like the last area in the game.

I go grab one of the earlier giftboxes: a Diamond Staff. The other one is actually a little further out of reach than I realized.

IGBkxYV7_o.png
More water.

qzirsxTy_o.png
As I watch, these little volcano guys emerge out of the ground on this screen and start flashing, and then shoot me with a lavaball if left alone. Shooting them makes them go back underground temporarily, but they come back a couple times before going down for good. Good to know.

hBrmLAKH_o.png
A passage.

kFVyYEvI_o.png
Ominous.

5RGNI526_o.png
The boss is a volcano.

GXzUe2yK_o.png
I love it. It switches between this wonderful dopey expression it flips back and forth to move around...

RqsbXx8C_o.png
...and just absolute fury. It uses this attack if I stand underneath it, and launches magma balls at me if I'm off to the side or something.

HBNKVbvL_o.png
Later on it starts spawning more vertical firebars on the sides.

Ekj1ThCS_o.png
It's tough! Eventually it finally goes extinct.

lEUl4G5N_o.png
I love this sheet. The recolor below is kind of less a recolor and more a pretext to start filling in gaps that the game left transparent trusting that the brown of the arena would show underneath...not totally sure I want to keep the yellow instead of white, either. A pretext to start, not finish--I have more work to do here.

uNofN3cM_o.png
I can go right on the screen below, now. The giftbox contains a Diamond Sword.

tFS1ojgb_o.png
Old Woman:
"When you can take all 90 forms, come to me. I'll give you something good."
Man:
"This place is crawling with monsters. Are you feeling tired?"
>yes
"Rest well."

He heals me.

Spoiler

I'm going to stop here, for now. I believe that the next update will finish the Grasslands, and with it, this LP as a whole. I could keep documenting the last few classes, but...eh. I don't know how many people are interested in that, and I'll still be collecting them and putting their sprites on the database regardless. Speak up if there's anything you want posted, I guess!

Moving on, I can come at this area from the land half now. I go right to get that giftbox from earlier.

v9CBTH3n_o.png
It's...a ship?

Some kind of stat booster, apparently, it won't let me go to Kanto.

lH35Pvys_o.png
This tree spawns roots in the ground nearby. I don't think he can telefrag me, just try to trick me into walking into one. At the very least, I never seem to get punished for standing still.

At this point, I've seen every monster in the game except one, and fought every monster in the game except that one and the sheep.

rZhVwkUb_o.png
I can reach the giftbox through the next screen. It contains a Capsule.

jcrumUJX_o.png
Somehow this one screen manages to COMPLETELY stump me until I realize that I can enter the water in the northeast. It takes an embarrassing amount of trying different screens.

ZgHEsPEk_o.png
Looping around through the water eventually leads here.

mVX9w8vA_o.png
Moving south...

DZFWXUtM_o.png
I find a shop. It's expensive, but I'm rich. I buy a fancy rifle, but it appears to be a two-hander, so that's annoying.

I take advantage of the warp, I can fight my way back to this place if needed. I'm not sure if there's another Shokuan's ahead and I really want to see what I've got.

わざポイントを ちょっとだけ ほったくる
Extra skill points.

The skills here are expensive. WP Service is 400 skill points, a few of the others are 200. Boosting skill points seems obviously worth it.

Hermit is itself actually a pretty weak class--one of those ones with very low stats that doesn't seem to be able to use any equipment natively. But it doesn't really matter, because I have Gun, and Gun is the only equipment that matters.

In the future, I can get:

ムルーク Muruku? via Kopa + White Kenshi
Lucifer, via Kopa + Sniper + White Kenshi + Hermit

ILNmU9QR_o.png
I warp to Sanque Mountains. I find the house where a boy wanted to see a White Kenshi.

Y2l3YCnA_o.png
Boy:
"Oh! It's the White Kenshi! You came to show me! Thank you!
Please take this as a gift."
Ami got Sinclair!
"After all, White Kenshi is the coolest!"

Sinclair is a fancy broadsword looking weapon, so not important to me. But now I know!

I also go to Besis, where there's a girl who talks about wanting to be a Dianthus and a boy who loves Kintaro. (I do have Kintaro, even though I haven't taken note of it--it's a male class that's a counterpart to Bear. The girl doesn't say anything different. The boy gets excited, but doesn't give me anything.)

I also also head to the Steppes and punch one of those baby sheep. 99/100 monsters defeated.

3qvtlOan_o.png
Back to the Grasslands. Since I hit the switch on the left side last time, I don't have to perform hax again. Normally this game has an unfortunate tendency to reset all progress except bosses when you leave an area, so that was nice.

Hermit is definitely weaker than what I was playing before, everything takes forever to go down. But it's okay. The enemies in the Grasslands are still easy, just tanky, and experience gain is still fast.

4XdfYKG8_o.png
Catching up to where I was...

8Zgicapz_o.png
More of those pillar-rocks, sort of an annoying screen for range.

lsBZcK81_o.png
Back to the water.

I think those baboons might actually have an attack if you get too close. They just...make no effort whatsoever to get close, so range shreds them.

iVmbA7v1_o.png
Stairs.

JV8KgYUo_o.png
Looks like we're almost at the end.

A8gLoSXs_o.png
...Hey, wait. You're not a boss screen.

There's a couple more screens of grass with spikes, and then...

izVwzPbl_o.png
...a house.

We saw this place at the start of this area, there was a giftbox in the north half.

This is where the final final boss is.

24z4F3SX_o.png
There's a summoning circle.

P7uB7UFR_o.png
As I watch, it starts to flare up and the screen starts to shake.

IRhvckk0_o.png
And the demon emerges.

The conveyor belts are really irritating in this fight.

k7aq7CMg_o.png
He teleports around, summoning four mini copies of himself. I can hit them too.

8HSi8sa3_o.png
He also has a cool pulsing light projectile.

FFhrUmvp_o.png
Unfortunately, the game glitched out and broke the boss fight in my first attempt! His mini-me got frozen like this, stopped being vulnerable to damage, and wouldn't move.

Ah6X7L9B_o.png
The second time works much better than the first! The screen shakes, and at last, he's gone.

BNLdDLO9_o.png
A treasure chest is left behind. It contains Transformation-Kun, an item that lets me replay the game with all forms unlocked from the start. (At least, I think that's what it does? It might just be all of my current forms.)

Knuj9YSJ_o.png
And here's the sheet of the last boss in the game. I'm not a huge fan of his fully materialized form, but I am loving the summoning circle effects.

Spoiler

That's it for Grasslands, and while there are a few things left that I can still complete, I think this is a good spot to call this LP. At some point, I'll be doing a few database uploads, but that might take a while. Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know or any bosses or environment tiles prioritized, and I hope anyone following along at home had fun! I definitely did.

Oh, thanks! This thread is probably a better place for my original stuff, though. I'm still hoping to do edits of the bosses here at some point, and I've got a few, but even the ones I've done don't sport quite as much frame variety as my old Ninja Taro set. It'll be a while before I'm satisfied with them, unfortunately.

I'm also still dreading getting the environment tiles to a stage where they're more easily ripped into ZQuest. Anything that involves interfacing with ZQuest terrifies me.

056_metamode2.png 055_metamode1.png

I should really at least post these in their current state, though. This isn't quiiiiiiiiite everything, and in particular it's missing a couple animated tiles like those beautiful water ripples, but.

Hi, everyone! It turns out there's more animation frames for the player sheets. A lot more. I might have known about this sooner if I'd ever engaged with the skill system! I've updated the current database compilation, here. It's up to 47 frames per class now, so 4230 frames in total.

That's not all the skills either. There's some skills native to the cat and dog classes that, uh...well, I chose not to rip them. There might also be more frames on top of that that I never discovered, I'm not really sure how to verify if I got them all.

(Also, if you haven't seen them, here's my take on the house/building tiles, and here are edits of five bosses. Unlike the playersprites, these sheets were polished and edited quite a bit. I'm hoping to do two more boss sets eventually, for 15 total, as well as possibly some more palette-streamlined versions of the tiles from the last post.)
