In the Gameboy Games, there were mystery seeds that would let you speak to statue owls in dungeons that would give you hints on a puzzle. Is their a way someone would be kind enough to script this?

If you dont need any graphical effects, you could just use the NPC script and use string control codes to check for and consume your custom item.
