The 2014 Map of the Year Tournament Is Here!

Hello folks! Another great year of Map of the Month has come to a close, which means it's time for the annual Map of the Year Tournament! As before, we will structure the tournament into two rounds. The first will split the monthly winners into three brackets. The victors from each bracket will compete in the finals. Simple, right?

Note that the polls for the preliminary rounds will be open from now through January 15th; polls for the finals will be open from then to January 31st.

Thanks to your support, we didn't miss a single month in 2014. This support was as diverse as one could imagine: we have fourteen maps in the tournament, and each one was created by a different member!

VERY BORING bracket and seeding details

All Map of the Month winners will get a seed based off their performance in the contest they won. More dominant performances will yield lower-numbered seeds. How do we measure dominance? We take the votes the winner got in the competition and add to it their margins of victory over their competitors that month. Let's call this value the member's "points."

To encourage a competitive final round, the three members with the most points will be placed in separate preliminary brackets, and members with higher-number seeds will be placed in whichever bracket best complements their seed number. Lower-number seeds are entitled to fewer competitors in their bracket in the case that not all brackets can be filled with an equal number of contestants. Further, no two members who tied each other in a contest will compete in the same preliminary bracket. Sole winners get preference over shared winners.

If you total the points, it looks like this:
