Well, You, /M/ and Sephiroth were shoe-ins for the jobs, but that doesn't mean that there can't be others that the staff is still debating... thus, my recommendation was born. icon_smile.gif

Look guys. The matter, quite simply is ... well to be honest, I was rather excited about this update, and it kind of feels sour now. I'm kind of upset if you really want to know. A tad miffed. Contributors are chosen by a staff-wide consensus. We look at people who have really done something to make a difference. You should be happy for the people who get it, it is an honour and a privilege. Saying that certain people should be nominated for it, or should deserve it, takes away from the real meaning, and makes it political. i.e. "I've done this and this, why am I not a contributor?" vs. "Oh, thank you for recognizing the hard selfless work that I have done."

Do not try to prove that someone deserves it. It should be a selfless person, who does not ask for it, who does something without asking for something. Contributors do what they do for the people, NOT for the glamour. The title is just our recognition of that. It is not something that we freely give away because someone's done a lot of tiles. (No offence to you great tile makers.)

Contributor status should be given to those who do something selfless for the boards, not for the talents they have at ZQ

Notice, however, that they did not ask themselves.

I didn't mean to make a project out of a recommendation. I just thought that this update was a wonderful opportunity.

That is indeed what reality appears to be, but consider the situation as well. This is akin to handing out free dollars for everyone who shows up at a store opening, and then having a few people run out to shout "FREE DOLLARS INSIDE!" and have everyone rush in for some free dollars. You can either save face and be generous and expand your initial consideration in who deserves a dollar (Which was only for those who cared enough to attend a store opening. Unusual.) or you can not spend any extra than you had originally planned to spend.

So yeah; We're doing this Contributor usergroup with a pretty solid definition of the terms of entrance in mind. It's always nice to see people trying to get in, because that (Usually. icon_razz.gif ) means that they're certainly worthy of it, which means that the site has benefitted from their presence in a number of ways. Obviously, that's quite a remarkable thing on its own, being active like that. However, the definitions for the usergroup are just so specific that although there are people who even surpass it, there are just a very set terms that you have to meet to be in the group. It's sort of like "Well you do this anyway, as often as you do, so..."

Just noticed a small bug. There's a </span> missing:

As far as the contributors thing, well, people are always going to disagree about who deserves the status as long as the criteria are subjective, but I think it's only a big deal because it's new. I'm sure it'll be practically a nonissue once people have had time to put it in perspective.

Couldn't contributors also be ex-mods and ex-staff since they once helped out on the site?

If they step down on their own, they continue to give advice via the same channels. It's basically the same thing.
