I bought the upgraded super bow, and it changed in my item menu. I bought the upgraded super arrow (purplish / red) and it didn't change. I already had the gold arrow and it's still the same. Also can you give a clue to the upgraded staff of light's location. And that last heart piece, too. Thanks!

The gold arrow is stronger than the magic arrows (purple.) I assume this was somewhat obvious since the golden one is more expensive.

 

Saying you're looking for the last heart piece means nothing to me, considering I have no idea which ones you have picked up in the first place. There is one each in level 1-8, the rest are hidden on the overworld. The staff of light upgrade shop requires somewhat out of the box thinking and it is fairly well hidden. Each screen mostly only have one "thing" on it. (Secret, etc.) So try looking in places where you haven't found any secret.

Any Hints as to where the secret staff shop is? Could use it to spelunk further into level 9.

After getting the upgraded light wand I was able to beat the manhandla the first time.

Just finished the quest.  It was fun, if not frustrating at certain points(I'm talking about you level 9 with the right side puzzle and so many Darknuts and that Manhandla with so many shooters that you need the upgraded Staff of Light to even defeat.  Also that level 7 Boss key with bombing that wall and the puzzle to get it.).  Definitely harder than normal quests.  Final boss was kind of frantic except for second phase where Magic Boomerang>it.  I definitely would recommend getting the upgraded Spear, Book, and Magic Boomerang for it.

I wonder if there are just 3 upgrade levels for the book, 2 upgrade levels for the spear, and 2 upgrade levels for the sword and if there are any other upgrades to other items?  Got 17 Hearts at the end of my run.

The trick in this dungeon is to go in and out of doors. Go back and forth until you see something new. Hitting switches may activate something to change (not just the décor), but I never could tell. The name of the dungeon says it all:

You don't actually get anything in this room the switch changes something elsewhere
