The Enemies
Here is all the information and download links for the enemies this month.

Team Ice

Blobbos - Moosh

  • Enemy Name: Blobbos
  • Description: It's the beloved fakemon, Blobbos, from Pokemon Clover. It shoots ice blocks that block your path and need to be smashed to get through.
  • Version of ZQuest: 2.55 Alpha 120
  • Quest File: https://www.mediafir...lobbos.zip/file

Freezard -  Lejes

  • Enemy Name: Freezard
  • Description: It's a Freezard. Watch out for their icy breath, it'll get ya. I had Ocarina of Time on the mind for some reason.
  • Version of ZQuest: 2.55 11/13/2023 Nightly
  • Quest File: https://www.mediafir...eezard.zip/file

Team Fire

The Liberator - Moosh

  • Enemy Name: The Liberator
  • Description: A hulking statue carrying a flaming torch that it attacks with. This enemy is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to preexisting statues is purely coincidental.
  • Version of ZQuest: 2.55 Alpha 120
  • Quest File: https://www.mediafir...erator.zip/file

Fuegolit - Deedee

  • Enemy Name: Fuegolit
  • Description: These little torchlings wander around aimlessly. Knock them into a wall to have them explode into flames that can damage you, enemies, or both. Set them up like your usual walking enemy but as an other type enemy instead, and assign the script; initd setup is inside the script file.
  • Version of ZQuest:  2.55 Alpha 120
  • Quest File: https://www.mediafir...egolit.zip/file

I found it tricky to vote for teams, because it seemed like each each team had a stronger and weaker entry to me based on the voting category. I genuinely think the teams are very evenly matched. I did vote, but the differences in each category were very minor. I'm gonna give a quick rundown of the individual enemies.

Blobbos: Personally, I think this is the overall winner of the bunch. A creative but simple concept that could probably be used in most quests. I do wonder how it would play with other enemies or hazards.

Freezard: Well, it's exactly what you'd expect out of a ZC version of this enemy! It seems just fine mechanically, but for me the visual presentation is a bit off-putting. I feel like the ice breath ought to be a bit easier to see and have a bit more character to it to communicate the threat level. The ice block also looks very 2-dimensional and doesn't fully cover Link. An extra layer of visual polish would have really brought this one together for me.

The Liberator: It's an effective boss that would be right at home in the right quest, but not something that would really be useful on a broader level. I like its attack set, the way they're threatening, have good tells, and are visually fairly simple. I'm absolutely going to be in the minority here, but I have some issues with the sprites/animations. To me, there's some stylistic mismatches here that I find jarring. The sprites are monochrome, presumably to strictly adhere to a gameboy aesthetic, but the number of animations don't really match that simplicity or the scope of the attacks themselves. I think the foot stomp animation is fantasic, but multi-directional dash/slash sprites seem a bit too "comprehensive"? Not a lot of GB bosses have so many unique poses. The spin attack move also looks messy/twitchy ... Maybe the idea is that he's thrashing about at random, since the sprites don't follow a rotation sequence like a "spin attack" would? I feel like my eyes are expecting a smooth spin, but the sprites for this seem better suited for a smaller enemy or slower animation. It's unclear to me whether that's on the sprites or their implementation in the script. (The concept of the boss is also hilarious, though.)

Fuegolit: Like the blobbos, this enemy hits that nice balance between simple, creative, and useful. I could easily see the two enemies feeling at home in the same quest - or maybe the same screen! There's a lot of possibilities with this one. It sounds like it's not the most flexible in some ways, so having some customizable firing patterns or other properties would be a plus.

Overall, each of the enemies was cool (or hot) and brought something unique. Nice job, everyone!

Thank you so much for entering! It's a bit close to the end of the month so the next contest is probably going to run through January (might announce it early to let people take advantage of the holiday season though).
