The more i read about this game, the more it looks like to be the true sucessor of Super Mario 64 I've been asking for a long time. Damn it, now i really need to buy a Switch.

First impressions time!

• Controls are really nice, and tight. The speed is closer to Mario 64, which thank God, cause Mario was too slow in the Galaxy games (and I always played as Luigi when possible because of this). He's not quite as zippy as he was in Sunshine, but it is a good compromise.
• Classic N64 moves are back in full glory, save for the punching. Triple Jumps, long Jumps, black flips, side flips, and dive jumps are all back. It took me a while to figure out how to do the dive move, and I'm happy that it feels close enough to a Hat in Time, since I just played that. But sadly, there is no dive cancel, which was one of the most fun mechanics in AHIT, and really allowed for some high-octane platforming sections.
• This is more about the Switch, than the game, but holy crap, these joy-cons are freaking tiny! I was worried they'd hurt my hands, since the 3DS does, and these are about the same size. Thankfully, they work really well, and the thicker profile saves my hands.
• Motions controls don't suck, aren't required, and are easy enough to use if you want to. Finally, they're learning.
• As of now, I have not seen a way to look at how many moons you have collected in each world. I'm probably missing it though.
• This game is not easy. It's not kaizo hard or anything, but it doesn't screw around. Lives, and coins are totally re-purposed (actually, coins are your lives now. Dying loses you 10 coins) so they can be a bit more devious with the level design.
• No power-ups, but you'll hardly miss them with the wide array of capture abilities, which add some needed variety into the series.

You can check your collected moons by pressing Y on the map (which is of course accessed with the minus button).

 

I found the motion controls are easy to trigger by accident, but luckily a hat throw usually doesn't mess me up too much when I move the controller too quickly.

Already beat the main story. I went into this game almost COMPLETELY blind, and hoo boy. WOW. I'm astounded. I LOVE THIS GAME.

Just made it to what I'm guessing is the final story related Kingdom. Nice spin on some classic themes here. I'm loving every minute, and I could see this replacing the Galaxy games as my favorite 3D Mario. Yeah, it's that good.

A returning idea from the past games also fits right in, and feels really cool without feeling like its relying on nostalgia alone. It's been a great ride so far.

There was one remix too, that I won't spoil, but it came at just the right time.

Speaking of the Galaxy games, I got heavy Galaxy vibes from the way the Luncheon Kingdom played out for some reason. Just heavily felt like it could be a world from those games... minus the capture mechanic of course, and also lack of space. Good world. Like pretty much every world honestly.

Just beat the main story, and wow that was something else. I'm exploring what I'll refer to as the "Postgame Kingdom" and found some things that really make things feel like Mario 64. Yeah, There has not been one Kingdom I haven't liked. When I was going into this, I was expecting there to be a few less exciting worlds, but the ones that are here are pretty good. Even the water levels are good. Especially the one that kind of sort of does that thing like Sunshine, kind of.

 

It really, really does feel like a true sequel to 64. Not saying Sunshine wasn't, but that game was very different. This game is different too, but it feels like they were really focused on making that epic open Mario game we've been waiting for, and they met, and exceeded my expectations. It also has more Galaxy-esque "stages" within these worlds too, so don't worry if you were thinking it's all open worlds.

Beat the main story myself. Fucking amazing game. And there's still tons left! Including new stuff that makes me happy that there's some actual sort of postgame, and that all the moons will matter instead of worlds being filled with them for the sake of it.

 

Ending cutscene annoyance

Although goddammit, fucking status quo. The setup was there. It was perfect. Get Mario and Peach hitched already! Then they just bullshit up a silly excuse to keep them not married yet. We've been waiting for this forever!

 

But yeah, great game. Gonna spend some more time in the postgame, which I've done a bit of already, and already enjoying that. This may be the most fulfilling Mario game ever at this rate.

About the ending:

It gave me the impression that Peach isn't actually romantically interested in Mario, which was a twist, especially when Mario consoles Bowser. It made me think that maybe all this time Mario and Bowser are in the same boat. They both desire Peach, but she's not interested in either one. Ouch. Well, at least they can all go golf or kart race to forget about it.

Honestly Peach isn't in the wrong in her decision in that moment, she just went through all this hell and almost had a wedding forced on her, then when Bowser tries to crash Mario's proposal Mario's only response is to treat it like a competition. She's just done. But from a meta sense I can't help but feel like that was only induced to maintain that status quo. You know, guys, Mario could still have to go on quests to save Peach if they were married... or better yet, make Peach a more important character instead of making her the prize every time.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with TS on this one. I was really ticked off that after changing so much in this game, they still kept the status quo in that regard. After that AMAZING sequence leading up to it (you know what I'm talking about), it really felt like a letdown. But hey, at least it was a really funny letdown.

 

Anyway. I was disappointed that the story ended so quickly (if only because the game was so great along the way), but at least there looks to be a ton more post-game content to get through!

We all got to the game's ending pretty quickly, but there's a ton of content left once you get there (including more stuff that unlocks after the end).

I don't know exactly how many moons there are to collect, but I think I'm probably about 40% of the way complete (wild guess).

Yeah, I beat the game with about 151 moons but I've collected another 100 or so. There's a lot. If I had to guess, I'd say I'm about half way maybe, with 350 moons so far.
