I agree that we need to get the Zelda Classic page back.

I think we should devote this thread to reconstructing the ZC and PZC pages on wikipedia, where people can post citations and links of Zelda Classic. And also to be on the safe side, we should keep a couple of backup copies.

Another thing we could do is to create a banner for peoples sigs: "save our ZC wiki page" icon_razz.gif

Seems like the ZChaters got active. We will need to get very active. I now go and advertise ZC on the biggest Hungarian VG site. Pray for my success.

Meh, so what, do we write a big article here, review it, rewrite, repeat several times, dig on the internet for good reviews, put AGN and PZC on there, and pray for the best? icon_shrug.gif

Well, it was deleted because we didn't give any sourcing on the topic. E.g. When the article was edited (often by myself) when new devs were added to the team, a link to the topic that proves this should have been shown at the bottom.

MoP: I think that's what we should do as well as adding sources etc.

Someone should post this at AGN too and see If they'd help with it.

And again, I wish to emphasise the improtance of using a backup. If the page is deleted again, we'll need to be able to take the most recent version of the article and add or delete parts to it.

Done

Should we maybe include a more comprehensive feature list? I mean, not like a total tutorial thing, but tell more of what ZC can actually do.

Well, I have found a mirror for a fairly recent copy of the Wikipedia page that we can use as a starting point:

http://www.answers.c...c/zelda-classic

Here is the article I'm working on. Please feel free to make changes/additions as you see fit (test in Wikipedia's sandbox). Once it's generally agreed that it is good enough, I'll post it on Wikipedia and see what happens.

CODE

'''Zelda Classic''' is a free fan-made computer game program based on the NES console game The Legend of Zelda.

== History ==

It began in 1999 as a DOS clone of the Original Legend of Zelda, which came out for the NES in 1986. It is more than the original however, in that it also includes a program called ZQuest, which is used to edit game files to create entirely new games, commonly called "quests"

In addition to the two "quests" that were included in the Original Legend of Zelda, Zelda Classic includes an "official" third quest. The third quest is opened after the first two quests are completed and is more difficult than the second quest. The third quest was not designed by Zelda Classic's programmers. Instead, it was the result of a quest design contest. The contest had several rules that required entrants to submit quests with a similar look and feel to the original two quests. The winning entry was submitted by Alphadawg, who also created the "official" ZQuest tutorial.

The game has since grown into a capable game editor and engine. There are many custom quests created by other users that one can download and open in Zelda Classic to play them. Quests released to the public may be password protected by the author to prevent others from editing them.

The features of ZQuest have grown so much since its creation that it is easily possible to create a quest that looks entirely unlike Zelda. For example, there are several graphics packs for the program that allow a change in the style of graphics in any quest you create, or you can make your own graphics set (though you were once limited only to 8-bit color, but now you can have 256 colors per blocks of 16x16 pixels). And although the game is still bound by the basic movement system as the original, many new items, enemies, and object types are available, as well as custom background music and animation.

The most recent stable release is version 2.10, which runs on Windows. Ports for Linux, Mac OS X and the GP2X handheld are also currently in the making, due for release with the next version, 2.5. Features introduced in 1.92 include transparent layers and increased tile and map space, making Zelda Classic (and particularly the ZQuest editor) more complex and versatile. Version 2.10 includes an updated GUI for the ZQuest editor based on the Windows 98 and 2000 operating systems' interface, as opposed to the DOS-based interface that had been used up to then. The next version, 2.5, looks to expand on this even more with the ability to create and use larger sprites, use 256 colors for graphics, and many more new features.

Zelda Classic utilizes the Allegro library.

== Major Contributors ==

'''Phantom Menace''' - The original programmer of Zelda Classic, who had programmed several smaller DOS games and had toyed with the idea of cloning LoZ for years. His first attempt in 1993 using GWBASIC was abandoned because of technical limitations. Was inspired to take up the challenge again in 1999 after seeing a Zelda clone demo by War Lord. Stopped working on the game after version 1.84 in mid 2000.

'''War Lord''' - Webmaster and head administrator of Armageddon Games, the site that hosts Zelda Classic. Also helped with the reproduction of the first and second quests.

'''Nutz4Linux''' - Administrator of Armageddon Games during its early days. Took first steps towards a Windows port of Zelda Classic.

'''Repton''' - Developer at Armageddon Games for a short time. Helped with porting to Windows.

'''fatcatfan''' - Assistant programmer of Zelda Classic. Also developed third party programs. Has since left the development team.

'''jman2050''' - Came on board after fatcatfan. Added many features since his arrival, but has since stepped away from the project.

'''Ganonator''' - Added to the team after jman2050, but never assisted in development. Some suggest that he was very unfamiliar with the code and didn't have the proper background, but his true reason for leaving was to create a MMORTS codenamed "Project Seven" behind closed doors for Armageddon Games.

'''Koopa''' - Koopa is a newer developer of Zelda Classic. As well as de-bugging and programming, he hopes to release an official tutorial for the upcoming version of ZQuest, version 2.5.

'''DarkDragon''' - One of the most active developers on the team, he is responsible for creating ZScript.

'''Takuya''' - Takuya was added to the team in June of 2006, and is responsible for checking build status on Mac OS X, as well as releasing bug fixes and general coding.

'''_L_''' - The newest developer, he is behind the creation of the fabled Roc's Feather, and has added countless new features in his mere couple of months on the team.

'''Tygore''' - Current webmaster of www.zeldaclassic.com

'''Alphadawg''' - Creator of the official third quest and the official ZQuest tutorial.

That seems pretty much word for word what the old article said, at least from what I remember.
I thin we should include the other devs, like you and Koopa under major contributers. I mean, you are devs.

Koopa's already there, but no Dark Nation. icon_eyebrow.gif Anyway, how are we going to source something like this? Most will be "From program itself." And I don't think that Wikipedia will like that too much.

Nope. I would know. I check things like this very often when I'm bored.

Well, if you need sources for the names of the developers, make a sticked thread here that lists them. As this is a fan site, it would be a 3rd-party source.

I would actually have to contradict the notion that it's most important to make backup copies.

Yes, they will ensure that we don't lose information that is deleted. However, if they still have just cause to delete it, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Also, if the article looks just the same as the old one, even with new citations, it's likely to be deleted again.

Finally, let me give some advice: don't keep reposting the page to defy those who voted for its deletion. Doing so could get the Zelda Classic article locked because that would be considered an attempt to circumvent Wikipedia's rules for articles. OR at the very least, if one person keeps doing it, that could get you IP-banned.

Not if it was a link to PureZC itself. That's different from a link to another article within Wikipedia, which would appear in the body of the article rather than the external links section.

Anyway, I don't know why they're picking on ZC in particular for having insufficient 3rd party sources; I see tons of pages with that dispute that haven't been marked for deletion. Perhaps someone just decided to take an initiative on this one for no particular reason. icon_shrug.gif

http://en.wikipedia....i/Zelda_Classic

That's exactly what's just happened - no thanks to Pineconn's rant below:

http://en.wikipedia....k:Zelda_Classic

In Wikipedia's response they describe the previous article as "horrible" and "looked like spam and was an ego-fest for certain ZC players".

Ego-fest? Huh?
