Personally I think script requests would almost be better off disallowed entirely, except through PMs. I'm more of a "stop whining and do the shizznit your own damn self" kind of guy... I don't mind asking for HELP when I'm close to being finished, which is what I did with my Boss Meter, but I hate the thought of commissioning anyone to do all my dirty work for me.

That trait of mine came mainly from my years as a Rom Hacker. (Not just SMW but other games.)

And Zem, I don't believe Molka Elite has any of your graphics. I plan to check all my custom graphics once the game is done, and I promise you'll be put in the credits if I have any of your stuff in the game. But I thought you made sprites mainly 'cause you enjoyed them and 'cause you wanted to be in people's credits, not 'cause you were expecting something back.

I'm not pointing any fingers though. Just trying to clarify.

But if we kill the script requests, wouldn't that make this forum lose about 75% of its future posts? Just something to think about.

...why are people making PM script requests? icon_eyebrow.gif

There are forums for requests on both AGN and PureZC. Just because there are some people better than others at scripting doesn't mean those better people can handle every single script request. This is the same for tile makers... which is why we have Developer's Exchange for that. If you want quality scripts, you should wait for someone with interest in the actual script to try writing it instead of trying to rope a single person that may not even have interest in what you want.

And if you want help with scripting Russ, the chances are you'll get them written for you =P
I mean, we are working on the same game here =P

It's mostly my other quest's scripts that I'm referring to. For instance, my day and night script. I think I've got it working, but I didn't want to pester anyone. I would almost be like saying "Joe, I need this script for KttH. And while you're at it, why don't you do this and this for me?" I've just been trying to avoid bug script requests.

I make sprites for people here to benefit the whole community and help others although like you guys, I feel used at times.
There are great spriters here who make great sprites in which are disclosed to the general public until they usually quit the forums. (Those "I'm leaving, heres all the stuff I made over the 5 years being here")

When I learned how to sprite years back, I vowed that I'd make sprites for people with no repayment required and teach people as much as I can at the subject.

How I see it right now, (hopefully this won't be looked at selfishly) I make sprites for people (I currently have 20 somthing submissions here at purezc) and I finally take a break to work on a quest that I'd like to finish for once. I ask for one or two scripts and a topic addressing how I and others are asking for to many scripts.

If script requests are disallowed, then sprite requests should be disallowed.
I make sprites out of the goodness of my heart for others.

Agreed.

I'll continue to ask for scripts- I've tried my hand at them, and it ended the same way my C++ ventures have- with 24% of the world's military power in ruins. Not saying I couldn't do it if I had the gumption (btw Beefster, awesome word usage) to just learn it, but I'd rather not get hung up creating scripts when I could be designing a dungeon. If people are PMing you asking for scripts, then just kindly tell them to gtfo and ask for it in the proper place, which is right here. So yeah, I'll post- if nobody replies, I may post again. But after that, chances are nobody wants to take on whatever you have planned, so you're better off finding a work-around or doing it yourself. I'm tempted to make a "How to Request Scripts" topic. Subtitle: "Because nobody wants to script Diababa for your quest."

Heh, don't scare people away from making requests too much, I'll have nothing to do with my life...

Something that I would like to point out though, is that if someone says they'll look into a request, it doesn't mean they're saying they'll definately do it for you, and they're doing you some kind of injustice if they change their mind.
I've though about taking on quite a lot of requests before that I've then decided have been too much work, or I'm not interseted enough in etc.

Radien made the point I was mostly aiming for-- that you really shouldn't be expecting a script the next day. One of my pet peeves.

Also, people shouldn't automatically assume that the first person who replies to a request is going to do it even if they never said anything about actually scripting it. It's a silly assumption that NEEDS to stop. That is probably my biggest pet peeve with requests.

Could a moderator please pin a topic regarding these issues?

What in the samhill is all the fuss about. I don't see too much wrong with requests. Although I also don't see why it's so hard to learn just enough about scripting to be able to make basic scripts on your own. There's plenty of examples to learn from nowadays when compared to a year ago when I started messing with them. In fact, I've had to of posted between 50 -100 workable scripts in that period.

Anyway, I've got a request:

Could someone make me a script that makes the screen 3D with a resolution of 768x1024 that can render wireframe models with pixel-perfect sprite collision and solidity checking along with alpha blending capability of up to one-thousand layers. please.thx.

PS- I need this by 18:30 pst tomorrow.

It's not the requests themselves that I'm bothered by. It's the fact that in A LOT of situations, (like you just parodied) people make the assumptions that shouldn't be made and request overly complicated scripts within a silly deadline.

So two three rules of requesting: "Assume nothing," "Urgency doesn't exist," and "Keep it reasonable." (Crap! I can't count today!)
