Is it just me, or do the layers in 254 not work right? As in Layer 6 doesn't work. If so, has this been fixed in the newer builds?

It's mot likely been fixed. I don't remember such a bug existing in 254 tough.

I'm using whatever the latest is now, and Layer 6 works fine for me.

Then I guess it's just 254. I'll upgrade. How should I do this? Upgrade slowly?...or just jump to the newest one?

I'd go straight to the newest one. Features aren't added anymore, and all the major changes are just bugfixes.
