I'd like to return to this thread simply to state unequivocally that no one on the development team is considering the concept of monetization further.

I believe ZC and this community's creations - from awesome quests to game assets freely provided for others to make games of their own - is something to be treasured and shared with more of the world. It was with that mindset that I began tinkering with ZC over the last couple years: it's why I ported it to the Web/Mac/Linux, slowly but surely am rewriting the engine to support true Z3 scrolling to enable the next generation of quests, and that mindset was even the source of these (admittedly misguided) thoughts on monetization. I'd very much like to reach more of the Zelda fans of the world, as ZC has a lot to offer them.

I know I've damaged the trust some of you have in me. Please accept my apologies.

Did Nintendo officially allow ZC to be developped up to this level? I mean after all, everybody who's downloading ZC can play one of the most popular Nintendo games ever made (and sold) for free without any limitations. If Nintendo did allow it, which I hope and believe (I don't know, that's why I'm asking), then it's all great.

However, even assuming everything is purrfectly fine, wouldn't it be a bit weird to suddenly ask for money for something that is technically still Nintendo's work in the basics? I doubt Nintendo would agree on that if they knew ZC was to be made subscription-based. I respect and praise the work of the developurrs of ZC in many ways. Without ZC, I couldn't have made all of my custom quests and I couldn't have enjoyed the quests of other great questmakers. But I purrsonally wouldn't go as far as paying money on a monthly basis for something that I've used freely for so many years. I would instead punctually donate a bit of money to the developurrs directly, on a freewilly (voluntary) basis.
