Back in the N64 era I did this all the time, and now I'm doing it again with Wii and Gamecube rentals. See, the place I go to to rent games allows five days before you have to take them back; Therefore, I take it upon myself to try and beat the game BEFORE this time period expires. Sometimes I do it brilliantly, sometimes I do it just barely; Technically beating the game before midnight but it's too dark out to bother taking it back so a late charge is still needed.

Sometimes I give up, or get bored of the game and just stop playing; These are exceptional cases though. And usually I have a good reason. There were actually one or two N64 games I had to rent two or three times to actually finish back in the day.

The most recent games I've rented for the Gamecube and Wii (in this year), have had the following results:

- Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Wii): Did not finish. Got too bored and frusturated by the gestures.
- Red Steel (Wii): Gave up. Too demoralized by the fact the game crashed RIGHT AT THE END OF A LEVEL, losing all my progress in that level. And it was a hellishly hard level too, I had to go back about 15 times!
- Starfox Assault (GC): Defeated game quickly. Got over half the stages on silver medals by the time it was due.
- Custom Robo (GC): Defeated game and completely dominated The Grand Battle before it was due. All gold.
- Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (GC): Defeated game, just barely. I was facing the final boss about a day early, and was getting slaughtered; So I had to go back and up my stats. With the clock ticking on my rental, on the final day however, I was strong enough to beat him. And what's even stranger, only using standard magicite (Blizzaga and Thundaga IIRC). And it was in single player. Of course, Hunter P's still got me beat as far as FF:CC accomplishments.
- Super Paper Mario (Wii): Technically, I (just recently) finished this in the rental period but there wasn't enough time to take it back. I'll have to take a late charge but that'll give me time to mop up some of the optional stuff. The only reason it was such a close call, mind you, is because I was dawdling for two days.

In case you're wondering about some of the titles I picked up, and why I decided to pick THEM of all things, keep in mind most of them were free rentals I got with the purchase of my Wii. (One free rental per month, for one year)

Maybe I'll tell you about some of the N64 titles I rented back in the day, that I finished (or didn't finish) in a later post. For now, it's late... so I must conclude this post.

So... do you try to beat games before the rental period expires? And if so, how successful are you on average? Any notable games that you finished (or didn't finish) within the rental period?

I haven't rented a game in the longest time, but I used to beat games within the rental period alot. Notsomuch during the N64 days, since in those days I wasn't as good a gamer as I am now. icon_razz.gif

I couldn't produce a list, but there were a few games like that.

When it comes to renting games, beating them is always my first priority. I no longer rent games now (for two reasons: 1) If I see a game that looks good, I buy it now. icon_razz.gif and 2) Because the Gamecube and Wii games are discs, there will always be at least one irresponsible person (or maybe just a child who can be a bit careless with discs) who will scratch the disc up to kingdom come. I played a scratched-up Batman: Vengeance, and the experience stopped where the game had to read a scratchy part of the disc.

Anyway, I have beaten some games within the rental period, like Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, Final Fantasy 3 (that one took up two rental periods, though), and Earthbound. Also, I had countless other games where I got up to the final boss and failed to beat him, like Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness and Lost Kingdoms.
