well this tipoc is interesting indeed I say it's still a banana because it's a banana that only half eaten, I wouldn't accept it of course, I'm picky about that kinda thing. Now some people would say it's not a banana and they could also be right because it is not a full banana and to some people that means it not what it was. Just like how half a car isn't a car it's just some scrap metal and car parts.

Then if a half-eaten banana is a "ban", what would an unpeeled banana be? A "(banana)"? And what about a fully eaten banana? That would mean that it is a " ". As in, it has no name.

Erm... yeah. icon_freak.gif

Both statements are true in the poll, because a banana becomes a half-eaten banana, but in essence it still is/was a banana. And a fully eaten banana is no longer a banana because it no longer exists, but it was a banana. The half-eaten part of the sentence is just describing the state of the banana. Both ways, it's a banana, and so, both statements are true. Just like how an unpeeled banana is a banana, but it's also an unpeeled banana, because both statements are true.

That's how I see it, anyway.

Okay, here's my theory:

You're eating lunch, and you eat half of your banana. Now, the guy sitting next to you wouldn't say, "Could I have that half eaten banana?" He would say, "Could I have the rest of that banana."

So, it's still a banana, just half eaten.

But what if he says, "Could I have your half eaten banana?"

Which it is.

It's simple, If I take a computer, and smash it into little pieces, it is still a computer.. Just damaged.. If you eat half a banana, it doesn't change into something else, it isn't a chemical change.. Err.. yes, the part you are eating is chemicaly changing.. but the part that is not eaten is still a banana because nothing happened to change it into something different.. See?!?!

i would say it would be a banana that's missing half of itself so it would be a half eaten banana which is the same thing as a banana thats half eaten so its a banana. except half of it is missing.

Neither. It'd be a bitten banana. You never said anything about having eaten exactly half icon_blah.gif

The more specific, the more overriding. "Half-Eaten" is just an adjective, and all adjectives are applied. I would override "Banana" with "Half-Eaten" banana.

Logically, it would be a half-eaten banana. However, depending on your personal point of view it could be either. To a Francis who drives a 100 thousand dollar car and eats caviar for dinner, it would be a half-eaten banana. To Frank, the man who lives in the box in the alley behind your house (seriously, check there sometime icon_wink.gif), then it would be a banana. To me, it would still be a banana. Totally edible and perfectly fine. We all breath the same air, so me eating something another has eaten off of would not be so bad. Not to say I go into buffet's and eat off other people's plates, but you get the idea. icon_sweat.gif

The "half eaten banana" is a type of BANANA.
So, it's a banana, just half-eaten.
It's true that some people would say "Hey, that's a HALF EATEN banana!" or "Could you give me that HALF EATEN banana?", but it's just because they specify the type of the BANANA, not saying that it isn't a banana rather something else.

(I am pessimist with 130 IQ and with an intuition-oriented, logic-denier, introverted character.)

I for one feel the need to have that descriptive word there. If you just tell someone that you are going to give them a banana, they automatically think of a full banana. However, if you say half-eaten banana, they know what to expect. Kind of like this over-exaggerated analogy -

There is a beast terrorizing the countryside. The locals want it gone, and advertise that they want someone to get rid of this "wolf". Hunter after hunter goes after it, because they are just expecting it to be a normal wolf. No one ever said that it was a man-eating wolf.

EDIT: Wait a minute, Who dug this topic up?

Degreenfreak dug it up. Dunno why.

It's visible in Blade's example that the people calling hunters against a WOLF, whiches type is "man-eating wolf". Like the half eaten banana is a type of BANANA. Banana. Not an invidual item, rather one form of the banana.

(However, sometimes you get another item, by tearing apart a certain item. For example, if you separate the eatable part and the protector part of that banana...)

It depends on who you are, really... If you don't like sharing food, it'll become something different because you won't eat it, the way you would an ordinary banana, therefore it will become a half-eaten banana. However, if you like sharing food, it won't make any difference to you, so it'll be the same banana, only half-eaten.

If you were to look at it scientifically, the half-eaten banana is still a banana, it just underwent a physical change. It wouldn't be a banana anymore if you made it undergo a chemical change or something along those lines, like if you turned the banana into a bowl of cereal icon_lol.gif
