Windows 8 is not much like the so called Windows Vista disaster. Windows Vista was actually a great Operating system once it hit SP2. I Know I used it for a long time. Matter of a fact I still use it on some other systems and they are running beautifully.

Windows 8 is not as bad as people let on, its actually a pretty fast system yeah it takes time to get used to. But once you master it it becomes as powerful as Windows 7.

Though Windows 8 will get easier to use later, with that new Update 1? or was it 2? is going to be adding options to boot to the desktop and have a normal Start Menu and also throwing the ability to run windows store apps on the desktop in a windows of its own.

At least MS is taking the right steps to improve the design of Windows 8, it all takes time. ;)

Windows 8 has been a train wreck of a OS.

If anybody get's it be sure to keep your original OS installed so you can boot it if need be for better compatibility. You'll need to create a separate partition to install Windows 8.1 on though.

Windows 8 may have been a train wreck to some people, but MS is working hard to make it better.

I'm consistently surprised so many people seem to have issues with ZC on versions of Windows beyond XP.

1.92b184 ran beautifullly for me on Vista, 7, -and- 8.1. 2.10 and 2.5 haven't given me any problems either. The only problem I can ever recall having is being unable to run in fullscreen on lower resolutions on newer GPUs. (For example, my 9500GT wouldn't play nice with ZQ fullscreen until 2.5, when the resolution of ZQuest was increased, but a GMA950 could do 1.92 and 2.10 fullscreen no problem.)

As for Windows 8.1, I don't see what's got everyone up in arms. I've been using it as a daily driver OS for two months or so now, and it's been more stable for me than Windows 7 has ever been. If Metro throws you off, you only need to install ClassicShell -- after that, aside from UI changes, it works no differently than 7, just with the capability to run tablet apps if you choose to. Metro stays completely out of your way. (I will admit I also shrink down the window borders wherever possible. I guess a couple minor issues you can easily fix don't really grate on me enough, especially when there's a big gain in other areas.)

Microsoft Account linking is also kinda dumb, I'll agree with this, but you don't have to use it.

I can't speak for Windows 8 (not 8.1), though. I'd probably get frustrated with it... after all, 8.1 did feature a lot of changes to improve usability. Think of it as Vista's SP1, I suppose?

I really like Windows 7, but I can't justify going to Windows 8. If I have to learn a new OS, I will learn GNU/Linux -- something that's worth the effort and 0% of the cost. And ZC works perfectly on Linux. (Better than on Windows, in my experience.)

Plus you can install it on flash drives and run it everywhere.

This was basically my thought process. I stopped using Windows 7 solely because my laptop started brutally killing itself, and I couldn't tell if it was a hardware or software issue at the time. I have very few complaints about Fedora, and learning the fundamentals hasn't taken very long at all. I just don't understand the point of using Windows 8 when their main selling point seems to be "you can make it look and act like Windows 7."

I've actually found personally that when used with a touch screen, Windows 8 is one of the best operating systems I've used in terms of speed and efficiency. There's a slight learning curve, but once you get used to it, the system just flows. That said, it's a train wreck if you aren't using touch controls that really needs easier ways of accessing it's programs and applications. I'm hoping the next major update which is supposed to have a more accurate desktop mode and proper Start menu will fix those complaints though, because it also seems to run very lightweight, even compared to Windows 7, which is a nice bonus.

I have Windows 8.1 on my laptop. Am I better off starting fresh with 2.50.1 RC2 or can I copy the current install that is on my desktop via TeamViewer's File Transfer service?

You can just copy your ZC folder. However I'd recommend using the latest version anyway.

Windows 8 is pretty chill, the update to let Apps run in a window on the desktop has already been released. The Start Menu is still missing, it will come later this year though. In the mean time you can install something like Classic Shell to get a decent start menu (Windows 9x, XP, Vista, and 7 style start menu's are available in the application), it also supports configuring Windows 8 to boot straight to the desktop and skip the Start screen.

I have a Desktop tile on my 8.1, came already set up on my Metro layout, so I just click that and away goes Metro
